Anybody know what it would take to stick a Dana 300 transfer case behind a T18???
    Or is it even possible??

My Dana 20 is really sloppy and I would like to change it out for something with a better low range.

    Thanks

Need a Texas bolt pattern 300 I think.

    $ R$A$R$E$ $ Found in 1980-81 Scouts I think?

You probably could get 3.15 low range gears for less. I'm not sure of it but it's an option.

You can buy an adapter kit from AA or Novak for the round pattern 300.. But that wil require tearing down the tranny and changing the output shafts. Plus you will lenghten the drive train by about 2 inches doing it. Which will probalby mean having to change your drive shaft lengths.

Why not do a tera-low kit in the 20? It replaces all the gears and you can do the bearings while you are at it. It will also give you a 3.16:1 low range. Not as good as a 300 but still respectable. I have the same problem with my 20 and I plan on doing the tera-low when I can scrape the money together.

Wow, I didn't think it would be that big of a deal :?

I was trying to get out of needing to tear it down and replace gears and such. I'm not sure if I have the patience and know how to rebuild my transfer case. I hate to admit that :D

    Well, thanks for the info,

The Texas pattern D300s are out there, but the one I saw lately was $750. There was a round-pattern T-18 in the J20 from 1980, but they are scarce too. The truck T-18 would be compatible with the D300, and you could mix your transmission's parts with the truck transmission's parts to make a hybrid T-18 that will accept the D300.

IMO manual transmissions and transfer cases are fun to rebuild once you have them out of the car. Don't be put off by the transfer case rebuild - ask for help if you need to.

The transfer case rebuild is not bad at all. Much easier then the transmission IMHO. And yes, I have done both.

If you go for the 1980 scout dana 300, you gotta get the intermediate gear as well. That's the one that goes on the rear of the transmission and drives the transfer case.

I've never tried to get one, but I understand that the gear is no longer made and is unique and less common than the transfer case.

Also, if the transfer came from an automatic, the intermediate gear won't fit on your transmission. It has to be the intermediate gear from a t-18/19 transmission (splines are different in automatic and manual)

I think it would be cheaper to get the adapter for the round t/c or a terra low set of gears.

They are out there. The International dealership in Richmond just got rid of 7 or 8 of them. Of course my neibor who works there tells me that they had these a week after they go rid of them

Pretty sure this is what you meant, but you need the drive gear (aka main shaft gear) for the D300, not the intermediate gear. The intermediate gear is in the middle of the transfer case. The drive gear slides on to the transmission main shaft and is held with a nut.

There is a company somewhere in cyberland that takes two transfer cases and combines the best of both for a hybrid of multiple low ranges. It sounds expensive, but may be worth checking out for rock crawlers. I don't remember the name, but try a dual+transfer+case GOOGLE.

The only downside to running dual cases in a CJ5 is that wheelbase is SOO short...so you end up with a really short rear driveshaft, if there is even enough space.

There's the Klune V underdrive too, but again, wheelbase is too short.

Niether of those options fixes the fact that his D20 needs repairs either. ;)

Well the 2 transfer cases might if it could be done.
