OK. I cleaned the carb adn threw on some gaskets. you know the jeep did have some transition now from idle to higher RPMs. So it still wasnt right and i parked it and got out the timeing light. So i hooked it up and measured the timing. well much to my surprise i did not have any mark on my scale at idle, but when i gassed it, it came on the timing mark scale. So i loosened the distributer and i could only get it to about 0-2 degrees. I did have it at 6 degrees before, but now i cant adjust it anymore, the mounting bolt on the dist cap is hitting the manifold. so this is odd, the timing moved really bad and is way off, so much off that i cant adjust it back without taking the dist out and reseating it a tooth over, or cutting off th ecorner of the dist cap which i i am tempted to do. So my only real recourse is to finally change out the timing chain.

This is th echain i am looking at

    http://store.summitracing.com/defau...earchinresults=false&N=0&target=egnsearch.asp

Is this the best chain to get?? This is my first ever timing chain replacement, what "special tools" do i need to get?

    Thanks!!

Dan I used the Edelbrock set but if money was not a big deal I would buy the Cloyes set. Basic tools and the big socket for you damper bolt is all you need.

I thoghut of that, but the timing moved really bad, i men i had it timed for this whole time now i cant even get past 2 degrees to tiem the jeep. Might as well get the chain changed, since i have had irratic timing for a while now, it seems to move at will, and the clamps is torqued down :(

How about the pin holding the gear on the dist is broken and the gear has shifted and jammed on the shaft?

This happens alot, and is really worth checking.

And Dan yes Cloyes is the best and if not the original they are the one that most racers use for double roller timing sets. They've been in business since the 1920's and started manufacturing roller sets sometime in the late 50's to early 60's.

Not sure bout it broken. it has been doing this for a while, if it was busted i would think it would have spun freely by now. But i will look into that. Gonna defiantely do the timing chain first.

Outside of this problem, is there a reason you want to change the timing gear? Just curious.

I just to take this variable out of the equation. Like i said the timing has changed on me for a few years now, and i do believe the chain maybe stretched, and since i received this motor as "rebuilt" but it looks like it might have been just a quicky rering and a paint job. So just going to change the timing chain and get that done then go from there.

    Billy said:
    Billy's thinking about a 4 banger.

Yes the timing cover has to come off, so yes the distributor has to come out along with the water pump, fuel pump, damper and all the pulleys, the block has to be drained and the bypass hose removed along with the power steering brakets and the alternator brackets, its not a quick Job Dan.

I think I'd yank the heads while I was into it that deep, Dan. Or better yet, see if you can scare up a set of heads to have redone and just swap 'em out while the Jeep is down. Of course my friends say I overdo and overbuild everything.
