I'm getting ready to start sandblasting / prepping, and primering my cj. Before I start I just wanted to know if anyone with experience had any tips before I started.

The body is in pretty good condition despite spot rust and the flat black shake can job. :(. It has one small dent on the back ride side.

Also, I'm bed-lining the inside of the tub.. any special things I need to know about that? And does the engine bay and inner fenders need any special type of paint (heat, etc)...

    Thanks in advance, *******.

*******, here's a post about prep, paint & some body work that others have found useful: http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=000051

You going to shoot color yourself? IIRC there is a window between when you prime and when the primer is too hard to hold paint - see Carey's post above. Many (except Billy) have reported good results using PPG Omni MAE paint. http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/cmg/mae.html

Personally, I wouldn't bed-line the inside. Just my preference. I don't think you get much benefit, I really hate the look, I believe it devalues your Jeep (compared to a quality body color interior) and it's very difficult to undo if you or the subsequent owner doesn't like it. I might consider doing the driver's and passenger's side floor for scuff resistance, but no further. My preference would be molded rubber mats, or a carpet kit.

Truth be told, Tim, that post completely overwhelmed me. I'm pretty much having to block it out of my mind when thinking I'm going to attempt to paint SSDutch myself...;)

Best advice I can give you is this:

Fix what needs to be fixed. Prime those spots. Give the body a good sanding and apply a sealer. Spray the color the same day you spray the sealer.

If you can, I would paint the fenders, hood and grille off of the body. Just makes it easier to get everything covered ;)

I've already got the hood, tailgate, and fenders removed from the jeep. And yes, I'm going to shoot it myself. I've got all of the materials (except for paint, mostly). I honestly like the look of the bedliner, and as much mud and water as my jeep sees (even on the inside) I thought it would be a good idea. I had also thought of just painting the inside, and having some diamond plate bent and cut to almost make some molded floormats of sorts. The carpet kit is out of the question, as I said before my jeep sees too much of the outdoors. Thank you guys for all the help, the link is very helpful, Tim. I'm going to take some before and after pics and let you guys see the progress.

THe time between primer and paint will not be very long. I'm not spraying the entire jeep at once, I don't have that kind of time during the day.. so one section at a time will be easier. Thanks again guys!
