Welp, according to the FSM for my 1975 CJ6, the 258ci engine oil capacity is 6 quarts.

Recently I changed the oil and filter and added the 6 quarts in accordance with the FSM. I then checked the dipstick and it was showing a level higher than the FULL mark on the stick. This did not concern me b/c when you change the oil AND filter, the stick will read overfull until you start the engine and fill the filter up.

So, I started the engine, let it idle for a few minutes, then shut it off, let things settle a bit then checked the stick again. It is showing I am about 1 quart over full (my best guess on the one quart over).

I am pretty sure the dipstick is the OEM stick, so should be accurate for the 258.

IF in fact I am one quart overfull, should I be worried? I have driven the Jeep about 100 miles since the oil change with no problems.

    Thanks for any input

My 75 258 uses 6 quarts of oil.

Not much help I know, but same engine.

One extra quart won't be enough to come near your crank, so don't worry about the crank having extra resistance from oil or beating up foamy oil or extra oil pressure.
I always pre-fill my filter at least 1/2-way.

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to make a note of the discrepancy in my FSM for future reference and fill only to the FULL mark on the stick (5 or 5.5 qts).

I'm still scratchin' my head as to which is correct (the stick or the FSM).

Welp, since you live in VT you must be on a hill. So, git in the Jeep, turn it around and face the other way then take another readin. Just spit the difference.R)

Maybe your dipstick is a little short.

You know the only accurate way to tell a Jeep oil level is when it's been sitting on the rollcage for 10 minutes & the ground looks like it soaked up about 5 qts.

Indeed! I'll ask my wife about the dipstick ;-)

How is the Willys coming along, Rit?

One thing you could do is measure the used oil on your next fluid change. If you buy the 5 quart jug and you can refill it most of the way up with your changed out oil your engine will need 6 quarts (1 in oil filter). That’s if you don’t have a oil burner. ;)
