I was looking around my steering to try and find the culpirt for the loose feeling, and everything seemes to be tight... which led to the steering box. I was going to just replace the sector shaft, but the i came across steve's encounter with the omix ada steering parts. I figure for 80 dollars i can put a pretty good chunk of the saginaw conversion out of the way and just assume the rest would have come further down the road.

The only problem i'm having now is narrowing down which one's i can use. I saw that the 76 to 86 cjs make good donors, the old waggies make good donors, and the older gm muscle cars. I'm thinking that anything with the general shape and four mounting ears will work... is this correct?? Also, i know that the 6 turn model should have a 76 stamped in it down near the end of the box, but is there specific models that it came in that i could pick off ebay for a little fee... something like an old buick or the like which many people wouldn't be looking for (mainly incase i go junkyard shopping... i don't want to mention the name camarro or jeep anywhere near these guys. a nice little unknown car would be ideal for picking it up in the yards around here)

With the exception of the Jeep saginaw boxes, what you are looking for is a 800 series power saginaw box with a 4 bolt mounting and 4 turn lock to lock, they all have the 76 cast into them otherwise. These boxes were standard in most all GM full size cars, Trucks, Vettes and Vegas don't count. Mine came out of a 74 Pontiac Catalina (3 1/2 turns), I have seen them in large Buick cars along with big Oldsmobiles like the 88 and 98 models and so on, as far as finding one with more turns lock to lock you will just have to look, Camaros and Novas and there other GM counterparts will be more like 2 1/2-3 turns lock to lock, a little to fast for me. Mine drives nicely at 70 on the interstate with the 3 1/2 turn box.

for about $100 including any kind or shape of saginaw trade in core (so if you have one even if it's not an 800) you can get a remanuf one from napa i found out. you will need to specify that you want one with a 4 turn lock to lock or a 16:1 constant ratio. the tj, yj boxes at the junk yard were going for $175. waggies for around $50. really crappy ones for free or $25.

Look in astro vans. There are millions of those things in junkyards and almost nobody takes parts from them other than the engine and tranny.
They have a short steering coulmn and a short shaft with 2 U-Joints too which come in handy when doing the swap.
