Hi guys, I'm new to the CJ world - just became a member yesterday!! I purchased a 69' CJ-5, with what I'm under the impression is a Buick V6. It currently sports Wagoneer D44 axles, & a SOA set up. I've yet too clean it up, and have some dirty pictures of the underbelly. The rear diff needs new R&P so it off & on Jack stands - otherwise it would have visited the pressure washer. . . Anyhow I was hoping ya'll could help me with some Identification. Thanks Fellas!! :JEEP:

Looks liek someone did the hard work for you! Nice jeep, saginaw power steering, dana 20 case, that's one heck of a drive shaft angle.. but that looks like double cardan joint so that should help that out...

remember that driveshaft isn't hooked up to anything since the rear axle is out.

looks like 231 engine? not sure but it doesn't look like our 225s. the po definately did some major mods to the jeep. also can't tell what tranny is in there. do you have a good pic?

Looks like a 231 V6, easiest way to know for sure is to google the casting number that's in the valley right behind the intake manifold.

Are those headers made out of rectangular tubing? The front axle almost looks like full width, do you know what the backspacing is on the wheels?

The 4 BBL Intake can give you a clue too. If its an Edelbrock it's a 231 as they don't make one to fit the 225. Other models can be looked up at the manufacture site to see. You can pop the top on the Distro and tell - HEI with even Lobes 231 EF - HEI with odd lobes (not spaced evenly) it's an OF.

I think that's just the intake manifold
    I don't think it's a 225 from the pics

I would think we could tell if it's and odd fire or not by looking directly down on the distributor. The valve covers are 231's. Thats about all I can tell.

Ive yet to drive it but I believe it is a three speed. Is there supposed to the large hole in the bottom? We almost got it started (guys still looking for the keys) with a screwdriver on the starter, but out of fears of burning it up I waited. Thanks guys, I'm really looking forward to rolling this rig!!! :v6:

What is the 4low on the TC. Also is the 231 a desirable motor? I have to slap gears in it to get it rolling, 4.10's are already in the front - with 33's is this cool, or should I go lower? Newb questions - I know my TJ inside & out - this is all new to me  Thanks for all the help :v6:

i have 4.10s and 33s and i like it. all depends on how crazy you want to get on the trail. it looks like your bellhousing has a big hole cut in it... i would get a new one since there can be a lot of stress on it. 4lo is 4wd low range for the trail or anytime you want to go 1 mph.

umm the dana 20 is not as low as the 18.. I think it is like 2.00 to 1? man I can't believe I forgot... It's a fairly stout iron case, I think Tera has a 3:1 kit for it... and 4.10's with 33's is fine, perfect IMO depending on what you are going to do but that is a good trail gear. The 231 buick is a great engine.. in fact the only thing that could make it better is if it were a 225OF (just kidding) but yeah keep that motor...
