One thing I have decided must go is the racket from mechanical resonance at most speeds and loads. Back in the sixties we didn't hear it except around 45 steady, or decelerating through 45. When I was going through the critter back in the eighties, we passed on rebuilding the transfer for some reason; don't recall why. Probably laziness / beer related. But now it needs to shut up. It quiets down when accelerating, and when decelerating reasonably fast, otherwise it's too loud for fun.

Is the intermediate gear and bearing the solution to most of this noise? I see a kit for this listed, and seem to recall that's the RX. Anything else I should do while I'm dirty? Rest of drive train is in relatively low mile rebuilt condition...... May wait till Fall now, but definitely before any long trips.

Back to bed, then off to work; see ya on the other side!

i think the main problem is the gears are striaght cut, and the only way to get rid of that noise is to go to an anged cut (or at least that's what i remembered, and schoolin has backed it up). mine has done the same thing with two different trannies in, and i'm staring to suspect that it's the intermediate gear in the transfer case. you can replace those bearings and shaft without dropping it, and i plan to, but time and the little bit of money it would take to gt the parts from novak have been illuding me for a while.

seems AA or someone else had a kit/process where you machine your int gear to accept Timken tapered bearings
maybe the AA site (Advanced Adapters)
supposed to cut down on noise also

the only staright cut gear is the low range gear correct? In high range you are running on the helical cut gear IIRC.. http://home.earthlink.net/~slicktea/id4.html look here and you will see a pic of the guts... as shown it is in the low range position so the straight cut gears are engaged, in high range the bigger straight cut gear is pushed all the way towards the helical gear to lock the two halves of the output shaft together.

Seems to me I was reading about eliminating noise in the model 18 case and that the culprit was almost always the intermediate shaft.

When I was reading about it the article claimed that the shaft can be removed whilst the t/c is still in the jeep.

Now, don't ask me where I read this, but if you search around the internet I think you can find several articles on fixing the model 18 case noise problem.

Thanks, all! Yeah, I know a little about square / angled gears and such, but mostly I'm interested in the intermediate shaft line of thought. Got lazy and thought I'd pester you fellas. The resonance defintely increases with the amount of wear somewhere in the t-case, I know. It's going on my list of "what next" stuff, for sure!!
