(Note, this is an extension of my previous thread about 31" tires on a '53 M38-a1)

So, I beleive that I should be able to continue to steer without a whole lot of problem, but, just to make sure (as I'm ordering the tires within the next day or 2), 31"x10.5x15 WILL fit on my non-lifted stock sitting 1953 M38-A1? Right now, I have 235/75/15 BFGAT's that are 29". Will 31's rub anything? My Jeep buddy is trying to convince me to lift it just a couple of inches. That, would be a pretty serious upgrade and don't really want to get rid of the 11 spring packs (I kinda like the historical aspect of it) in place for more "modern" CJ springs. Would I be smarter to go with 30's? I'd hate to plop 31's on and have the inside's rub on tierods, or whatever and tear them up. As other early CJ's know, it takes about a city block to U-turn these old Jeeps.

    Yep - they'll rub.

In front they'll rub on the springs at full lock - you can adjust the turnstops but will lose a bit of turn radius.

In back they will rub the inner fenderwell under full articulation of the axle. Even the stock tires will do this. It's just an annoyance more than anything, just putting rub marks in the paint. Not that hard on the tires.

The only way around it is wheelspacers, but it's a careful balance as spaced too far out and you'll rub the outer fenders while crossed up.

A lift won't prevent the rubbing.

So, would 30" help any of this? It doesn't look like I can get past the rubbing part, but would like to minimize the rubbing while turning. I hate the idea of spending $500 on tires just to tear up the rubber while turing corners around town. The 29's I have now don't rub, but I am wanting bigger tires....looks like a trade-off.

You almost have to do some trial and error, IMHO - since a 30" tire is not a 30" tire is not a 30" tire, and your choice of wheels is going to play into it as well.

My Cepek 31" FC's rubbed, and IIRC they were realistically a 29.5" tire. But I had them on 7" wheels, which I think made them stick out a bit more.

Yup your gonna have some rubbage, Good set of nitrogen heavy duty shocks will help also. The constant pressure thy keep on the springs seem to help a lot. You'll have to adjust the front stops like Mike said. I have 32s on my M38A1 they rub, you learn to anticipate it and and do things so its not as severe as it could be.

jd7 -- Do you have a picture of what 32's look like on an M38-A1? I'd like to get an idea of how "stomperish" mine will look. BTW, I'm planning on getting a set of Outlaw I rims. Thought that'd look pretty neat with the BFGMT's.

    FWIW here's 32 x 11.50's on 7" wheels with a 1" Rancho spring lift (and a sagging body).
