My headlight switch has never had the rotary action for interior light dimming that it is suppose to, is this normal for a 71 model. According to my manual the switch should rotate but mine is locked down pretty tight. I guess what I'm wondering is the manual wrong, or is the manual right. If it is right does anyone know if the switch Krage carries is the right one with the dimmer in it.

My original from my '60 does not turn. I bought one from Krage on eBay, shipping was cheaper, and it still does not have the dimming function. Make sure you ask for one with the black knob unless you prefer white. Maybe someone else can help about finding one that rotates.

    Good Luck

Mine, original I'm assuming, in my '62 and in the truck too I think, would dim and brighten the dash gauges.

Trucks and wagons had a totally different switch with the dimming feature, plus dome light position. I don't think CJs' had a dimming feature as stock, unless later years like McRuffs'. At least I don't remember any, but that doesn't mean much. :D

I guess the factory manual took a few liberty's then. It does show 2 different switches, one early syle and one late style, the later style lists dimming control but I have never been able to get it to turn so I'm asuming that the later housing for both the dimming and non dimming are the same just minus the reostat for the truck and wagon model.

Is the rheostat from the DJ on the outside of the switch?

Thanks for the pic. The switches shown in the service manual don't have rheostats. Makes me tend to believe the manual incorrectly states they have the dimming feature.

i tend to agree. although cj's came pretty bare bones then. the dimming feature could be an "option". :D

also my fsm covers dj's as well. the diag could have been a "typo"

and with kaiser/ willy's tendency to mix parts from close years, who knows? for instance mine is registered as a 69 and the serial number agrees but it has aspects of a 68 i am finding out. unless it being canadian from windsor makes a difference. ?
