Ok, as of today the engine, tranny, and x-fer case are off. Also off are things like the ross box and the master cylinder. Soon to follow will be both axles.

Now, all of these things are in good working shape, and will most likely be bolted back on at some point in the future (after being inspected to be sure they're ok, of course).

Now, I am wondering, what all do I need to do in order to make sure nothing bad happens in the meantime? Obviously I'm going to be covering all the various openings to prevent critter infestation of course - should have done that today, but it slipped my mind. What else? Anything?

Keep in mind there's a good chance, thanks to my vast absences due to school, that this could all be sitting for quite a while.

I would suggest fogging the cylinders with a fogging oil. This will prevent the cylinders from rusting. Also you might want to see if you can find disictant (I have no idea how to spell that) plugs that you screw in where the spark plugs go. These help to keep the cylinders dry as well. Of course tape everything up

When I store smaller hydraulic parts I clean them up, make sure that the bores are still well coated with brake fluid, and bag them in Ziploc bags, labeled using a Sharpie marker. If they are going to be stored for several years, I also coat the rubber parts with a stable vegetable oil, like Canola. Rubber preservative might be better, but the veg. Oil works fine for me. Tranny and transfer I clean up but leave full of gear oil, on a pallet covered up with a plastic sheet. If I’m storing for a long time, I try to rotate the gears every few months to coat everything in oil. I store engines pretty much the same way – cleaned up and full of oil. The only precaution I take there is to pull the plugs and squirt in some top cylinder oil (like Marvel Mystery Oil) and replace the plugs. That way, the rings have a less of a chance of sticking when I’m ready to roll again.

All the above and wrap them in plastic. To keep the elements and dust out. When I picked up my rebuilt long block it was coated in oil and sealed inside a tough plastic bag. It was that way for about 2 months before I get the time to put it all back together and put it in the jeep.

When you get it installed again. Be sure to change all the fluids before starting it.

Drain all the water out of the block. You don't want it to freeze over the winter.

    Not asking....

Anywho, it will be in a barn, but the barn doesn't have insulation quite yet so I will definitely make sure to get the water out....

Now can you tell me how to do that? "Turn upside down and shake" doesn't work so well in this case. :D
