I'm getting to the paint stage. How many of you do your own prep? That seems pretty easy. How about painting. What have you paid to have your cJs painted. Ican't see making it too pristeen as I know it will get scratch up but I'd still like it to look nice.
    Any feedback is appreciated.

I'm currently in the process of painting the body tub on my '69 cj 5. It's pretty straightforward; I'm not a good painter, by any stretch, but I did it once before to a YJ, and was very pleased with the results. Here's the process:

Prep: 3M stripping pads, sandpaper, orbital sander and grinder to remove all loose paint, crud, etc. Then use Marine Clean and Metal Ready to get what you can't see. Then POR 15 as a base coat; I slather it on pretty thick.

Paint: I'm using milspec high zinc primer and milspec OD from Gillespie. After the first coat of primer, I use epoxy instead of bondo for defects and holes in the sheet metal, then sand smooth. Three more coats of primer, then four coats of OD. I'm using Durabak for the inside of the body tub. I'll probably use 3M finishing pads after final coat to render the finish completely lusterless.

That's it. I'm using aerosol cans, as I did with my YJ years ago; the finish is very durable, resistant to UV and chemicals, etc, and looks great...

If you paint it yourself, you will save some $$$. Even if you have to buy the gun and compressor, you'll save money. Nothing to it.

I did mine with a paint roller! I washed it before hand.

Its been touched up several times now with spray paint. Resists scratches good, doesn't do so well in sunlight constantly and pretty much looks like crap. However it didn't cost much and everyone gets a laugh out of it.
