My guess, you have a manual transmission and a twin-stick transfer case. Leftmost shifter is for the tranny, middle for 2wd and 4wd, rightmost shifts the transfer case between high, low, and neutral.

Another, but more unlikely scenario is a manual transmission, single stick transfer case and overdrive.

I've seen Jeeps with 4 - transmission, twin stick transfer case, and OD - fun stuff! :D

PS - stickers showing the various arraingments:

While on this thread, I have newly aquired 1958 CJ-5 :) with exact 3 shifter pattern (2) senario. (also include no manual or prior knowledge).

For the jeep to move in either direction I have 2wd/4wd shifter enaged either way and she is fine and moves along. However, I (must) have to use shifter 3 in high or low. When shifter 3 neutral enaged - nothing at all.

Is that correct? I though maybe w/ shifter 3 in neutral that just tranny gears would work. Sorry in advance for such a naive question.

Yes Glenn that's how it's supposed to work. With the shifter 3 in H, there is no reduction from the transfer case and just the tranny gears work as you suggest.

Sometimes you can have 4 like in mine. 1 for shifting, 2nd one for the Overdrive High & Low, 3rd one for engauging the Front Axle and the 4th one to shift the Transfer Case into High or Low. Mark[IMG]

Hey Willy-N, what boot are you using as shown in the pic above. I can see that you slit the boot for the x-fer case, but it lines up nice with the OD and Tranny!!

It was out of a Chevy 4X4 with floor shift and transfer case shift also on the floor. Sure worked nice cause you can form it to conform with the original floor pan angles. The $2.00 price tag was also nice! Mark
