Guys – need some advice. I have a 225 engine that has sat for a couple years since it was built. The guy built it as a Pikes Peak Hill Climb motor, but never ran it. We both turned the engine every so often while it was sitting. I just finished putting it into my 51 and fired it up (HEI, Kenne Bell Number 1 Intake, Holley 390, Kenne Bell valve covers). Well, it spit oil out the dipstick tube (Read Oldjeeps thread from March on that) and later today (after I put a longer tube on it) it looks like it started to come out a valve cover bolt. It was running 40 to 60 psi at idle in pressure.

The valve covers only have an oil fill with a GM twist cover on the passenger side – no PCV or breather or anything. I am pretty sure it needs something, so will have to pull the valve covers and get them board out.
    1. What should I put and where?
    2. What should it feed into – I don’t have a hookup on the air cleaner to run anything into if it matters.

Dipstick – there was a lot of discussion of 4 vs 5 qt for the 225. I have 2 sticks that go straight into the block (neither agree on the level) with no seal on them (they leaked the worst). I also have the one out of my old 225 in a tube that I always filled to 5 qts with no problem – this is what is in the new 225 and measures full so I am pretty sure it’s got the 5 qts in it. The pan looks deeper than my stock 225 and I know it has a 350 cover and oil pump.
    3. Is it 4 or 5 qts and where can I get a seal for the original tubes?

    Thanks

Put a PCV valve on one valve cover, and a breather on the other one. I have used both style of dipsticks, without serious leakage problems. Run the engine for about 1/2 hour at high idle to aid in breaking in the camshaft. Also helps to seal the rings up (which is where your blow by is coming from).

    Good luck!

ANd you hook it to the largest vacuum port on tha back of the carb, the one that is ported to the underside of the throttle blades..

I have a large port on the back of the intake under the carb - would that work as well? The large port on the carb is on the Passanger side of the 390. The only other ports on the intake (other than the water jacket) are small ports and I can not see any of them meeting the vacuum needs.

FSM says it's 4 qts. + 1, if you replace the oil filter.

If it is a higher performance application, you may need a header check valve type of evacuation system. I use them on anything with higher compression to ensure the crankcase is evacuated of all pressure before it has a chance to build up. As for my advice if you choose a PCV valve is use only a pcv valve. I cannot deal with oil leaks, or a nasty motor so I stry away from oil vent breathers, they usually end in a mess. You could use a pcv in both valve covers and route one to the large port on the carb, and the other thru the air breather so it has an outlet other than internally. Good luck

I also agree to lose the air breather. see if you can weld or braze a piece of steel brake line to the air filter housing so you can attach a hose from the valve cover to the cleaner assembly to vent it. My air breather is a piece of junk that lets it leak oil really bad and it is loose on the valve cover, i jsut havnt gotten to changing it yet
