Hi all, I am wanting to swap in a v6 in place of an iron duke in my cj3a. I am wondering what Buick years are the best, and had anyone tried a fuel injected engine. How about odd or ever fire engines, Isnt the dauntless an odd fire? Thanks in advance

I have a 1965 V6 Oldsmobile F85 155 HP 1 Barrle Carb in mine and love it! I belive the 67-70 something Buick 225s were 160 hp with the 2 bar carb. A injected 231 would be nice but I like the simple work on engine myself. Hard to figure out why a electronic injected engine quit in the boonies let alone bailing wire it back together to limp home. Devil's advocate, I've yet to have my FI TJ quite on me in the boonies due to FI problems, I have had carb issues in the past with carbureted vehicles. ;)

When they work right it is the best set up to have. I am just tired of not being able to realy work on my newer rigs when things go wrong. All the electronic sensors ect that can go wrong yet there is realy nothing mechnicaly wrong with the engine. If I could get a low milage V6 injected I will snag it in case this one goes south on me. Not disagreeing in principle but past experience dictates otherwise for me until now at least.

most motors have a limp mode that will get you home even if it is at a slow pace. finding the problem is a challenge but then again anyone ever tried to work on a 4.2L I-6 with all those vacume hoses? To me thats worse.

wait, wait... i think the hiss is coming from over here. no 4.2's in my past, but a 2.8 from a cherokee all vacumed up. it's amazing how much difference it makes when you finally find the hose that's been lose for a year or two. i'll take electonic sensors over that any day.

Man the newer Bosch style efi systems are so simple and easy to work on that, well.. they just are! everything is plug and play and you would really really have to screw up big time to not get back home.. as mentioned above the limp home mode will nearly always get ya there. I like carbs too but only because I am a glutton for punishment...

I've had even & odd fire V6's in my CJ over the years & sometimes (like now) have a combination of parts from both. I don't have the EFI version yet, but nearly all my toubles are due to broken driveline parts, not anything related to the engine. Problems that I've seen with modern computer controlled EFI motors are actually few & far between but one that I remember well was when the gas station nearest the campground had water in their underground tank. None of the new rigs that got gas there would run, the water (we presumed) plugging up the gas filters on the new rigs. The owners of the new rigs all siphoned off as much gas as they could, trying to get it off the bottom of the tank & gave it to us guys with old stuff & then back-blew out the filters with a small compressor. After doing that everybody was up & running, the old rigs running fine on the crappy gas & the new rigs driving into town to get better gas.

I think it is what you prefer. Ever fire, odd fire, carb, or injection. engine does not really care how it gets the fuel, as long as it is there. The 2bbl rochesters will run as fairly absurd angles, but injection could keep it running on it's side. However, there are more possibilities of fiddling with the carb over injection. But, once you know FI, then the parts are literally plug and play.

I will keep my odd fire, carb, and points for now.
