Do you pull the transfer case alone first and then the trans or pull them together?
Overdrive is off along with gear.
    Trans is ford 4 speed.

When I did my clutch, I pulled them out as a unit. I think someone on here said it's pretty difficult to get them apart and when they are in the Jeep.

I had good luck removing the t-case first. I took the pad off of a cheap floor jack and bolted a 16" long piece of 2 x 12. This worked ok to lower the t-case. Use a strap over the roll bar to keep it from tipping. The first time I did this a few years ago I busted one of the bolt ears off so be careful to not let the t-case hit the floor.
Start by removing the floor from the Jeep.

The floor is still out from putting the engine in. I'm going to buy a transmission jack this afternoon. So far I've bought a hoist, an engine stand, and now a trans jack. I've got as much in tools as I paid for the jeep. Seems though that these old jeeps are pretty addicting so I might as well have what I need.

I've had success using a motorcycle jack to hold a mated trans/tcase. The last one I helped with was pretty big:
NP435/D20 combo going into an Early Bronco. Once it was on the jack, had the units installed in less than 10 minutes.
Another buddy used the same set up to install his T18/D300.

This item and a piece of plywood...

I've always taken them out togeather as a unit, just seems easier + they seem to balance nicely on the crossmember, but that may be 'cause i've got an overdrive on there.

Thanks guys, I bought a trans jack at Harbour tools yesterday on sale for $49. So I'm ready to tackle pulling it out.
I'm planning on breaking them between the trans and the bell housing. The Chiltons book talks about pushing the trans to the righ to unhook the throw out bearing. I'm thinking of just pulling it out and leave the throw out on the arm. Then when reinstalling just putting the shaft back through it.
    Am I missing something?

just pull straight back, wiggling side to side slightly
    may catch momentarily, no biggie
don't forget to support the bellhousing; jack underneath or chain from above
IMO it's better to let them angle down somewhat than hold up high

Don't try and "unhook" the throwout, let it stay in the fork. Pulling it out, doesn't matter anyway, it'll just fall into the bell....

    Patrick,
Then when I put it back in, do I just reach in and put the throw out into the fork and try to stab it or put it on the trans and try to rehook it?

Put it in the fork. There should be a clip that holds it there. Once the input shaft slides into the throwout bearing, it can't fall and should slide right onto the bearing retainer....
