I'm thinking about removing the oil pan later this week to pound out some dents and to clean the pickup and tube really good.

Is it as simple as removing the bolts and pulling the pan off? Anything I should look out for? Aviation sealer on the new gasket or no sealer at all?

Just that easy. New gasket no sealant. Ah don't forget to put oil in it. ;)

I used Permatex Aviation form a gasket and sealant #3H on the pan gasket. I did not want anything on my new engine leaking for at least another 10-12 years.;)

Okay that sounds easy enough :)

How about cleaning the passages to the heads? Can that be done from the bottom up, with a coat hanger or something? Maybe compressed air?

I'm just asking about this because I recall Baby John saying he cleaned out the passages with the air hose or something.

Where would one get "Permatex Aviation form a gasket and sealant #3H "?

Thinking this might be in my very near future also.

The hole for the rocker shaft oiling has to be done from the top, the hole goes fom the rocker shaft to the front camshaft bearing journal. So no you can't clean them from the bottom end. Check the oil screen carefully, it is held on with (2) 1/4" hex head bolts, you will need a new gasket of some kind under it when re installing it, mine was packed with sludge, I soaked it for about 10 minutes in brake cleaner and then used an air hose on it, gently of course.

So the oil pickup screen has a gasket under it? I assume this is not available new which is why you reused yours?

Bob I got it at a local auto parts store, I like it much better than the regular gasket maker and you can use it as a bolt thread sealer also, all my water pump bolts are coated with this stuff, I used this stuff on most all of my gaskets instead of the hi tack, putting it on with the enclosed bottle brush makes it very easy to use (way less mess).
Joe what I meant was there is a gasket under the pickup tube not the screen, the screen can be soaked and blown out, the gasket on the base will probably peel apart when you remove the oil pickup from the motor.

I don't use sealer on a cork gasket.. just a few dabs to hold it in place.. the oil makes the gasket expamd and seal.. if'n ya goop it all up it won't expand..

Bubba theres a flaw in your theory, the cork still expands from the oil, cause the edge of the gasket is still getting oil saturated from the pan, its just that it is sealed to the pan and the block rail on the top and bottom, this prevents seapage that will happen if the gasket does not have sealer of some kind on it. Permatex 3H is thin, way thinner than Permatex 1 or 2, more like honey and is not mesy at all. I have always used sealer on my cork gaskets of some kind and never had one leak.

I did not use any type of sealer on mine and it leaks. I have found out if you over tighten the cork it leaks even worse. I retighten lightly after the motor was put in and run for a few weeks but it still seeps. Thinking of trying sealer.

My recipe - check that the pan sealing edge is flat first. Then glue the gasket to the pan with gasket cement, like High Tack. To install, place a small bead of RTV on the gasket and wipe the block surface with oil. Then assemble - I use a 1/4" rachet and a long extension so that I don't overtighten the bolts.

I'm going to remove the D18 pan as well because that gasket is leaking like a sieve. I did not use sealer on it but I plan to use RTV this time.

The oil pan gasket is on order so tomorrow afternoon is the oil leak fix day :D
