OK, don't pick on me too much for this question, I'm new to Jeeps but I've had 18 various VWs and always did my own work on them, so I'm only a partial idiot. Long story short, got my '69 CJ-5 (with 225 V6) a couple weeks ago as a "gift". The giver swears the thing ran last year. However, some wiring is burnt, some clearly just not hooked up. I'm re-wiring it piece by piece as a sanity saver. However, I'm stumped on the starter! At the same large lug where the battery positive cable attaches at the starter is also a heavy (10 gauge?) wire running to the ig switch. The only other wire to the solenoid is lighter gauge, running from the uppermost small lug, that appears to ultimately join the ig switch too. My problem is that that small connection keeps reading negative polarity! I don't see where else this little wire can connect. I also can't see anywhere this little wire is grounding out. I've checked three different diagrams and three manuals, but none show these connections in any great detail - anyone have a pic of what their starter looks like?
    OK, pick away!

I'm new too but I just put my engine together and it runs so I( must have done4 something right.
My starter has a large stud and nut in the middle where the battery cable and a 14 gauge baby blue wire with a large terminal go on. Then on each side are small terminals with a black wire and a whilte wire. I think the white goes inside but I got them backwards the first time and the only problem is nothing happpens. Reversed them and it cranked right up.

The larger connection should go to the switch to supply power for switched items from the ign switch.
The smaller wire should supply power to the solenoid when the ign switch is turned to the crank position.

IF you have two (2) small wires, one is the resistor bypass, the other powers the solenoid. easy way to find out which is which is to unhook both and try them one at a time to each small post. only one will work the solenoid.

If the small post on the solenoid is reading negative - do a continutiy test to see if it is grounded on the inside of the solenoid. I have had some short inside the solenoid.

If it's just the wire - rerun a new one from the start position on the key to the small start post on the solenoid (sometimes marked with an S).

I have never used anything other than:
    1. Bat Power - large post
    2. Ignition Power - large post to key / fuse box
    3. Starter - small post to start position on the key

Hey, thanks to all for the useful info. I plan to get back under the hood tomorrow after work and see if I can get this little monkey to crank with the key. Since there's no muffler, if it catches I'm going to be the most popular guy on the block. (My next question will be "Geez, why doesn't anyone still make the exhaust system for these?!")
