My clutch on my 71 CJ wont budge. Something is seized up and I have no Idea why? It’s so bad that I ended up breaking the clutch cable. I can’t even get it to move with a pry bar. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before and if so what is the problem?

This is my first time posting and I just wanted to say this forum has really helped me out in the past!

I am thinking that somehow the release bearing has become "one" with the bearing retainer. Real tough to get a eyeball in there to see, but it would help. I don't think there is anyway that the pressure plate could hang up like that!

Does the pedal move at all? Usually a stuck clutch is the disc stuck to the flywheel.

What Glenn said. Do a search, I had the same problem on my 68 just over a month ago. The clutch disk was "rusted" to the flywheel and pplate. Drove it in gear with the clutch pedal pushed down untill it snapped loose. Worked a couple times and decided to replace the clutch finally. Good thing I did. The clutch disk was worn down almost to the rivits.

That's what I was afraid of...I'm going to drop the tranny this weekend and tear into it. Before the cable broke the pedal wouldn't move at all and I noticed that it was getting progressively stiffer over the last few weeks. Just in time for summer : (

Also does anyone have the part number for the advanced adapters chain clutch linkage and any experience and thoughts on it?

I have the AA setup and think it works pretty good.

Funny thing, I just put a new motor in and when it was done, my clutch was stuck. It was new 5 years ago, and I inspected it while everything was apart, even cleaned the flywheel and pressure plate with brake cleaner so they were nice and pretty. After it was running I thought my clutch had somehow lost adjustment as the tranny did not want to go in gear. Messed and messed with it until finally got a loud pop and everything went back to normal. Weird. Then had to go back and make the clutch right, where I had been trying to adjust it.

We've discussed the AA clutch controller here many times, do a search. Most guys like it, although some have found that it may bind a bit when the axles/frame are severely crossed up (I have not experienced that with mine).

Here is one page of the instructions with P/N, etc.

EDIT: Note that this instruction says through 1970. It will work on a 1971, but you need to get a new clutch/brake pivot shaft that has an "ear" on it to connect one end of the chain. My '71 didn't have the ear. Got a new shaft and bracket from Carl Walck.
