Still working on the steering. Looking solid here.
    1970 - 143.jpg

Tie rod flip went well. Like the clearance gained.
    1970 - 142.jpg

We look to be correct here.
    1970 - 144.jpg

My dilemma is that there is only one turn of rotation to the passenger side.
YJ box, YJ pitman arm, CJ7 tie rods and drag link that came with the axle. Searched everywhere and didn't find the fix for this.
Reaching out to the group for where this went wrong and a possible fix.

How many turns is the box? And are there more turns to the other side?

I'm guessing longer drag link and center the box

Sounds simple to remove the pitman arm and center the wheel. Put pitman arm back on aiming straight back. Don’t let draglink determine the position. You may need a longer or shorter draglink. Speedway Motors has raw stock drag links fairly cheap.

Some arms have flat spots in the splines and will not allow you to install the arm where you want. In that case you must get a triangle file and cut splines into the flat spots.

It sounds like your box is off center roughly 1/2 turn.
You can clock the pitman arm in 1/4 turn increments. Remove the pitman arm and rotate it 1/4 turn on the splines to the rt. Loosely install the nut and turn the steering wheel until the wheels are straight.

    Completed a few small items.

Extended the bump stops down. Replaced the wheel spacers. The ones I had were an odd metric nut. Two different lug nuts were going to be trouble sooner or later.
    1970 -147.jpg

Bent the shifter cane to fit, Bought it long to cut it to length. Might just leave it long
    1970 - 147.jpg

Locked in the steering shafts and a little paint.
    1970 - 148.jpg

Installed the steering brace. I had wondered for some time if it was going to miss the winch plate.

Plugging along, Made the brake connections to the wheels and master cylinders. Bled the system out.

Thinking of redoing the lines from the distribution box to the master cylinder and add a couple of coil winds.

    1970 - 158.jpg

Sent the Jeep off to the exhaust shop. Also having them burn the steering box and bottom shock mounts in with a bigger welder. It will be gone for a week or so. Started working on getting ahead on some other items.

Weather was good so the grill got painted.
    1970 - 160.jpg

Brought the windshield over to evaluate it. That got out of hand quick. Changing it from white back to black,
    1970 - 157.jpg

Put the last of the big parts on order. Fuel injection and the Saturn overdrive. Both of those are at least a month out.

Jeep is still at the muffler shop. Its a side job for him so its done when its done. Working on what is left in the shop

Built out the grill, radiator, shroud, Power steering cooler.
    1970 - 167.jpg

Finished out the windshield fresh paint new wiper motor.
    1970 - 168.jpg

Had a break in the weather so painted the air cleaner.
    1970 - 169.jpg

After 9 months on order the drivers seat finally arrived for the beetle. Planning on finishing this project up this summer. For some reason this one gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

Jeep made it home from the muffler shop last week. While it was there they welded on the steering box mount and all the lower shock mounts with a bigger welder. Also replaced the ball joints.

    1970 - 179.jpg

The steering was finished up prior to going to the shop but I missed getting pictures.

Took the advice I was given and lengthened the drag link until there it would turn evenly both ways. Also re-splined the pitman arm. Pitman arm is from a Jeep Grand Cherokee. High steer kit,
    1970 - 177.jpg

Made a trip over the hill and Kyle threaded up the new tire rods and drag link. Thanks Kyle! Very happy how the whole system turned out.

Shop did a clean install on the exhaust system. Used V band clamps for easy removal if needed.

Looks good, how much room do you have from the rear driveshaft to the exhaust where it crosses over?

Definitely looking forward to hearing it run for sure. Really been enjoying this project.

There is about an inch from the top of the driveshaft to the crossover pipe.

Nice to have the Jeep back home and making headway again.
Installed the new front tank and hooked up both tanks to the switch valve.
    1970 - 181.jpg

Plastic tank is flat on the bottom and uneven on top. Filler neck went though the hole close enough. Dodging rain showers to paint a couple of miscellaneous parts today.

I love the V band clamp at the header connection.
Did they cut the 3 bolt flange off and weld the V band straight to the header collector?

Yes, he cut the flange off and welded the V band straight to the header. It is a nice tight fittment.

sweet. no more worries about blowing collector gaskets... If I never change another one, it will be too soon.... Happily the headers I got for my build have the ball flange on it, which, while not as good as a v-band, is still vastly superior to the other option.....
