Daunt/A1 Engine Mount Location

    I am aligning a Dauntless/T-14 onto an M38A1 (F-4) frame.

I have the engine, tranny and T-case on a picker, and the frame on jack stands.

The M38 frame's tranny crossmember had the mount for the F-4's transmission, (which I removed), and a very useable transfercase-side rubber thrust pad. On this pin, I set the Dana 18 on as the rearward anchor point for the rear alignment of the engine/tranny/T-case assembly.

I cut the engine mount arms off the old CJ-5 frame, and they are now bolted to the rubber motor mounts, the engine mount's top and bottom faces straddeling the M38 frame, for marking for welding.

The problem is no measurement in the "Universal Series" Jeep Manual are useable in this situation. The front frame-to-engine mount face is like 27 3/4" for the V-6 frame in the book, but before taking the engine mount arms off the old CJ frame, I measured 14 1/8" from the top of the radiator crossmember to the face of the engine mount arm. Even then I could tell it was not close to 27, but more toward 30".

This M38 frame seems to have an "added" newer-style radiator crossmember. It has the grille-to-frame oneholer/donut grill mount, but I am using the frame pins and a fold-forward military grill, so I am grinding this off so the grill sits perpendicular to the frame.

The current position of the engine, with the F-4 T-case shockmount-pin as the rear point, is very close to the driver's side 14 1/8". The left-side measures around 14 3/4".

    1. With all these points in close position, I find the top of the hatchannel of the tranny crossmember is at least 1" farther back than the holes of the tranny mounts, using the T-18 thrust mount hole as a "known".

    2. Engine seems to sit lower one the frame when looking at the fan-to-radiator scheme.

Does anyone have any advice? My welding happens Sat. If I keep moving things around, the body will not fit.

I am ready to bend heavy-gauge alloys with my teeth.

Having rode the '66 hard and put her away wrecked, many times, I can MAKE it work. But that style is not a real, safe solution. Everyone will want a ride when this thing is finished, and Lord only knows why they didn't put rollbars on 'em stock. I just don't want any passenger to get hurt.

Here is a link to some pics about a month ago.

If you have done this before, please tell me about the problems and solutions you've had.

I've done it, but I use a Chevy motor and a T-90. I left the tranny crossmember in the stock location, except I moved it 1" to the drivers side. This was my forward and back location. I don't know if a T-14 is any different. My set up cleared the body with a little mod for the distributor.

As a point of reference to Scott's post, the T14 tranny case is slightly more than 1/2" longer than a T90. My AA catalog shows them both with a 9.50" input shaft, from tip to tranny case.

Welcome aboard, good luck, and... got pics?? :D

EDIT: Checked your pics over on Qtec... looks like the A1 is in very good shape!!
The '66 is, well.... unique! :D
    Keep those pics coming!

I ground the pin of the transfercase shock, stubby or whatever it is called, off, the rubber is still there, with the bolt. I cut it off flush with the T-90?'s grommet retainer face. Now I am faced with another question: what is the height of the T-14 transmission crossmember mount? Assuming the crossmember is bolted face-to-frame. Mine is Jimmy-rigged, and has run well as such, but I buried my buddy whom I bought the rig from 2 years ago, so the system I have for holding the tranny is fabbed, and there is nobody to ask about it.

If I had the height, I could maybe find an in-stock mount for something close and go from there. I am just worried about the proper engine angle, since the engine mounts depend on it.

    Thanks for all so far.
