Today the exsaust was put on and went for a long drive. Cruising 60 mph on the main highway was nice, for once did not have to use the side roads like in the M37! Even took the side doors off for a little air flow. Very happy with the ride, got a few looks and had a lot of fun!! It is quite enought for a sterio now nothing banging around underneith anymore. I know I will enjoy this new toy! Mark

I took a 120 mile trip the other week. I do have to say it was very enjoyable even though I thought I wouldn't make it without incident  ;)

You allways wonder with these older vehicals if something is going to go wrong. My ears are perked up for any funny noise and I'm tring to learn how it sounds running to get used to it. New vehical at first can make you wonder but putting some miles on it slowly will make me feel better. I have put a lot of miles on old stuff so my ears are allready tuned for problems. Mark

    5.38!!! nice and low!.

just curious since i have 31's x 10.5's and a 225 as well but a 4.88. i assume you have an overdrive to get it up to 60mph comfortably?

No I don't, I do not have a tach but gear ratio and tire size runs the engine at 3500 rpms. Red line max HP is at 4,200 rpms and I would not want to run 60 mph for a long time and 55 seems like a happy rpm for the engine. Having drove several rigs with 5.83 gears the 5.38s are nicer. I can pick up a over drive for it costing $200.00 not sure if this is a good deal yet. But I am weighing the extra cost and may go for it and knock the rpms down at the higher speeds since I have the HP to still pull with. When I first got the Jeep I did a test not knowing the RPMs on the engine and just floored it to what I felt was red line in second and got it to around 54 MPH with out correction on the speedometer for the taller tires. Now I just did a calculation on the RPMs I was doing at that time and I must have hit 4900 rpms! Sure did not sound like it at the time and I thought it would have went faster to?? These must be a high reving engine to do that even tho I won't ever do it again now that I know what I took it up to! Mark

Mark if you can get an OD for $200 it's a good deal. Any parts, etc you may need for it, or a rebuild (as well as price comparison) you can find at www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com

I run 33s wirh 3.73 gears, so I have no need for an OD. At 60-65 mph I'm turning about 2250 rpms... and can easily pull long steep hills in 4th with a full load of camping gear :D

Look like the Saturn Over Drive is a good deal! It would sure make my engine run at lower RPMs at 60 mph. I will pick it up. Ity is in the box but does not have the shifter with it but that site sells shifters for 48.00 not a bad deal either. I just need to fide out what spline it is to make sure it matches my transfer case. Thanks for the link I saved it. Mark

I believe that Herm does quite alot of business with our forum members. Be sure to let him know you're with Early CJ5.com
I don't think dropping the website name gets you a discount... but it's good info for him, to know we're sending folks his way :)
Do a forum search here for "Herm"... you'll see that he's a popular guy around here!! :D
