I got the old winch torn down to the problem.
One of the springs for the brushes isn't springy and the armature is really rusty.
I'll post a need in the classifieds but is there anyone other than "that guy" that sells motors or small parts like brush springs for warn 8000 upright winches?

Brennan’s garage has a two direction motor for our winches. I’ve thought about the upgrade.

On the motor housing it looks like the end cap is not removable? It appears to be made from two pieces but I don't see an easy way to get to the brushes. It loks like all the windings need to come out then I can access the brush assembly?

The end plate on the motor was just rusted into the housing. A socket between the brushes and a few taps broke it loose.

More clean-up and I'll be able to see what the brush assembly needs.

I seem to remember from long ago (as in 60 years or so) my dad filing down a set of too-large brushes to fit a motor ( or generator).

If the proper brushes are unavailable…

Well of course everything is expensive. I quite like the old Bellview style winch. They are simple, over-built and can take some abuse…neglect even. And you can sink them between the frame rails with Saginaw power steering to get the fairlead lower. Get that thing going!

Sure. Done it myself. Helps to find a cooperative counter person at the FLAPS.

Looks like I need a "spiral wound flat spring"
The spring material is 24ga and .188" wide curved around a .25" post with a .8125" arm.

A visual search finds these in golf carts and some power tools but actually identifying what I need will take some time.

    It's alive!!!
We have an electric shop in town that works on 30hp+ motors. Figured I would stop by and luckily enough they had a broken brush spring that was the right material. I was able to delicately bend the spring to clear the brush retainer. I reassembled it here just for a test.
From here I can justify chopping up my bumper and opening the winch gearbox to inspect the gears and bearings. I'll drill and tap a 1/8" or 1/4" drain on the gearbox. Locally we have a lot of low water crossings so I would like to be able to easily drain the case (and install a magnetic plug) I'll get some basic bumper controls set-up but I think I'll just put all the bits and pieces for in-cab on my Christmas wishlist.
