Re/wired under the hood and cleaned up the dash but found no fuses except one off the main wire coming into the dash from the battry. Don't think they were wired this way in the past but now it has 6 new style fuses protecting the wiring. Not much left of the old and many conector redone or replaced. So the wiring is finished now and on to the lift kit when it gets here. Mark

I beleave the headlights and wipers have relays built into the switch instead of fuses. The one should go to the turnsignals I think.

If you had seen all the bare wires in the Original harness going back to the tail lights you would put fuses in. Having said that being a electricial over 30 years I have seen many a problem due to wrong or no fuses in a system. One short and the whole system can melt bown and just might catch on fire under the hood! Working for 40 years Ok is no garrentee that it won't do this tomorrow. I have seen plenty of melted harnesses in vehicals in my life. Had a Vega do a melt down on me befor for no reason lucky the hood was up and I had a quick disconect on the battry! VW Baja did the same thing and it melted down inside the floor kick panels and behind the rear and front side panels all the way back to the engine. Mark

I recently installed a new harness and it has the blade fuses. Decided to upgrade so that there would be no issues in the future like it catching on fire.

Did the same as Billy with Wimpy. All new wiring so I don't have to worry about the old bare wires, and I did put a quick disconect at the battery and I do have a 40 amp fuse on the main wire from the battery. I figure there's not much electrical draw on the stock setups, the generator only puts out something like 35 amps, if it works... so I figured 40 was big enough that a short would pop it and still let the system work properly. Hasn't popped yet.(except for the time I was playing around with a wire and shorted it out on accident. Had to replace the fuse after that. )

Does anyone have a picture of the main fuse on a 61 CJ5? Mine has a weird setup with a plastic see through box, and aluminum foil in place of the fuses...I know this cant be original. It has two wires going in one side of this clear box and one wire coming out from the other side....

Do you mean there is no fuse? Or that you dont have a picture of one? I know the one I have is not original, I am trying to find out what I can replace the one that is on there with....thanks.

A cj5 (per the factory manual and owner's manual) has one fuse between the ignition switch and the directional signal flasher. Unable to determine from diagram if a jeep equipped w/o turn signals required this fuse. My '55 with mostly original cloth wiring has turn signals and this fuse. But maybe no one is counting this fuse?

I think you guys mean circuit breaker, not relay. The originals had a circuit breaker on the main light switch and that was about it. Probably had a fuse on the turn signals and one on the heater if it had one. I think the heater was always an option and the signals may have been optional as well on the really early models.

You can't go wrong fusing things but if your wiring is in good shape you can probably leave it cb protected. If you add any new circuits I'd fuse them though (i.e., radios, lighting, etc.). And if you rewire it all I'd use a blade fuse block for everything.
