Intake Gasket Advice

Next up on the to-do list is replacing my intake gasket. I have a substantial oil leak at the drivers rear corner and I assume it’s where the intake meets the valley of the block (I think I heard someone call it the “Great Wall”).

Any recommendations on gasket brand? Heavy bead of Right Stuff for the front and rear? Any other tips or tricks to ensure success?

 

Edit: Now that I’m looking at gaskets online, I see that the 225 uses rubber seals at the front and rear.

I would not use the rubber end gaskets - IMO
a good bead of permatex ultra gray for ends . and wait 24 hours before running engine

 

I would use the rubber intake ends, but glue them to the block only with 3M yellow or something similar.
The rubbers have a tendency to squish out unless glued in place.
Then I would use Ultra or similar in the corners.
Whatever you use, make sure its cured for a good length of time as mentioned above.

 

After having this issue multiple times with Felpro intake gaskets, never again:


Victor Reinz is my go-to these days with no issues.

 

I toss the end seals and use ultra black as well.

 

My opinion is that Felpro is a brand that used to be top quality, but with the pressure to be low priced these days, their quality is less and they're riding on a brand name.
They are far from the only ones doing this.

I was looking at mine today, major oil leak running down back of block from the intake.

 

This is my issue too…

Thanks for the advice. I’ll go with the Victor Reinz and Ultra Black for the ends.

 

Most of the rubbwr end gaskets I remove are actually installed backwards. The slots go to the outside and the continuous side goes in. Not sure why so many people get this wrong but may be why so many have issues.

 

i painted my engine Detroit Diesel green, so with that its mandatory to have oil leaks all over it like a Detroit so im gold. I just left them completetly out

 

Now you tell me! I had a major leak out the rear manifold gasket (after R&R the intake) and this is what I found (see pix). Looks like I installed it backwards.

Not sure if this would actually count as being installed but it does appear to be in backwards too.

Did an 304 intake install a couple of months ago. Had a HELL of a time with the end seals, We used a number of manufactures (3 intake sets) including fel pro. What I found is all the end gaskets were made of some kind of plasticy substance that wouldn't compress well. Instead it squirted out every time. I wound up using a sealant bead on the ends to get it to seal up properly.

BTW, it seems the same substance is being used on replacement clutch fork boots, and it doesn't work there either...............

 

Unfortunately, most all of the aftermarket rubber parts are made in China. They haven't seemed to have mastered the art of rubber compounding and molding.

 

I suspect they could, but are driven more by the need to reduce costs, so as to provide the lowest bids to buyers in the US.
