The intermediate FrankenJeep has the stock LS fuel injection, but with no return line (the stock pump is self-regulated). I have a standard CJ5 fuel tank, with a fairly small opening for the pickup and sender. My hope is that I can install a high-pressure pump and a regulator in the fuel line but…

Many of the inline pumps don’t ‘suck’, and want to be fed by either gravity flow or a low pressure pump. I’d like one that will pull fuel from the stock top-of-the-tank pickup and push 58+psi to the regulator. Without spending $600, is this a realistic hope?

Put the inline pump after the mechanical pump.

Mechanical pump on an LS? I don't think so.

Oh right... run it off the rear pto?
    No...
The v-belts we'll put a cam on a shaft with a pulley to actuate a mechanical pump

My go-to is this guy... but it don't work without the self priming electric pump to get it out of the tank.

Seems like a later tank and in-tank pump is needed. Maybe tanks Inc has one.

I am very limited in knowledge on this but I do know the factory inline fuel pump on my 2001 7.3 diesel excursion mounted mid frame must suck well from the tank, only a small filter in the tank. And it pushes the fuel up to a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel filter housing where at least a minimum of 62 PSI is required. excess fuel is returned to the tank. Not a very expensive pump as I recall, Rock Auto has a Bosh pump I used that was less than 100 dollars. The motorcraft version comes with the new rubber mount but cost a bit more. Might not work at all for you but just saying.

If the baffles are there to prevent fuel starvation, wouldn't this also be the case with an external pump? At what point of tank emptiness will this become an issue?

The float bowl in the carb bleeds the system of air and holds several seconds of fuel. It may run lean or rich but it will run. an efi system does not have this so for me with an under seat tank I've had it starve while dribbling out the filler neck with at least 3 gal in the tank. That's why I had to add the modified boat filter, to serve as a float bowl before the inline pump.

This is what has been in my 3B since about 2008:
    https://www.summitracing.com/parts/vpn-gsl392bx

In that application, it does suck from a top tank exit and is frame mounted, as low as I could get it. Max psi is 87. I have the regulator set at 43 psi for the ProFlo4. I do use a return line. It does suck just fine and has a prefilter. I made sure the tank was near full before putting power to it the first time.

I run an inline pump on my 5.3. You need to have the pump mounted lower than the fuel tank. You can put it inside the frame rail near the transfert case. The pump will me fed by gravity. Also run a dedicated ground wire from the battery. If you just srew it into the frame, with time you will get corrosion and connection would get bad.

Both jeeps that I have converted to EFI have external pumps mounted inside the frame rail.
I have no issues pulling fuel out of the rear tank which pulls from the top.
They are both setup to pull fuel from the tank, through a 6 way valve mounted between the seats and then to the pump on the frame rail.
The Walbro pump that Duffer linked is a high quality unit.

This is the Walbro pump installation on the 3B, mounted at the bottom of the right side frame rail, almost directly above the spring hanger. The frame is obviously boxed or one could mount it inside. Those blue Aeroquip lines are for the rear axle vent and the ARB.

The final filter is a Trick Flow cartridge unit mounted right over the area of the frame stamped VIN.

That is fair price for that pump. You could get a spare. A quality regulator and good to go.

I do carry a spare. The one really big advantage of an external mounted pump is that you can change them out in about 15 minutes.
