Hello everyone, anybody know about the dana 20 oil fill plug location?I have 3 what I believe are dana 20 transfer cases 2 cases⁷ has the fill plug on the back upper right side.1 case has it on the passenger side.I have seen both mentioned on posts but either or, nothing about both. The one Im pretty sure is from a 72 cj5 3 speed 304 has the fill on passenger sideThe other one I'm fairly sure is from 72 cj5 4 speed 258.I have another 304 3 speed dana 20 it's on the back think from 73 cj5 renegade. The broncos have it on the back I'm pretty sure.was the side plug only on 304 3 speeds for some reason?thanks guys

My 74 with a t-15 and dana 20. The fill plug is also on the rear face of the case.

I had to use an 8 point socket to get to mine on the CJ7.

I have a set of those Craftsman 8 point sockets made just for square head pipe plugs. Very handy for checking fluids on gear boxes. Inherited from our son that passed away 2 years ago. He was a marine engine mechanic.

I think the fill hole location has to do with whether or not the case is/was equipped with a parking brake. All parking brake equipped Dana 20s have the fill plug on the passenger side.

I suppose to answer the original question "was the side plug only on 304 3 speeds for some reason?" - the answer would be no since every parking brake equipped Dana 20 is side fill. There are also plenty of Dana 20s that came without a parking brake and all the parts interchange so a parking brake can be removed and run without. Then you have a side fill Dana 20 without a parking brake...
