Does anyone know how to clean these little filters? It's a gauze element on a Welder 38 and what I understand is washable. I've searched and no definitive answers. Hope someone has info on this. Thanks for your help.

Same as a K&N. They sell a kit with both soap and oil.

Otherwise you can use a dish soap like dawn or a cleaner designed for the filter.

You need to use a filter oil for re-oiling. They are tacky and won't leach back off the gauze medium. There are a ton of different oils so if you run low on the expensive stuff, you can switch over. Don't over-oil. The aerosol cans are the best for your style filter.

Gauze/foam filters are common on quads and motorcycles. You can find support at any dirtbike/quad shop.

Thanks for the replies. Ohiowrangler, do you oil yours? When the filter was new there was no sign of oil on the filter or any instructions to do so. If it needs to be oiled I will, but working as a mechanic for almost 40 years I've learned to hate the oiled filters. The oil costs MAF sensors causing all kinds of drivability problems, and if you use less oil they don't filter as well. I know I don't have a MAF sensor, but I don't want to oil the filter if it doesn't need it.
Maybe there's an alternative or a pre filter that would fit the diameter of the filter?

Gauze filters that aren't pre oiled are usually white.
[IMG]Any coloration in the element ( usually red or blue) is an indication of a pre oiled filter.

Gauze style filters are designed to be oiled. If you don't oil them then the medium won't trap any particulates.
    Your choices are:
Replace the filter with a paper element.

Install an oiled outer filter. Un-oiled foam outer filters only stop large particles like sand and are usually reserved for lawnmowers, sandrails, hysters, etc
    [IMG]
Install an adapter and install a standard filter housing with a paper element.

    Oil the filter.

Personally, I'm not a fan of gauze filters in automotive applications, especially offroad ones where there is fine dust.

Thanks jeepdaddy2000. I never liked that air filter and have been looking at the 5 1/8" air cleaner adapter and that should take care of my concern. I had searched and was in Jeep, Toyota and other numerous websites and there was never a definitive answer. Some said don't oil and others said to. In off-road conditions I want the best filtering possible.
