    I’d like to know how the suspension on the “rear” half handles when going “backward” down the road? Positive caster, control arms loaded as a trailing arm, etc

    Would the "rear" ring and pinion be trying to go in reverse when the transmission is going forward? So essentially, there would be 4 reverse gears and one forward gear?

    No, only if it’s flipped upside down.

    You can put a front axle in the rear, but steering and tracking geometries are way different.
