I just aquired a jeep from a friend and I am having some trouble identifying it. The I.D. plate on the dashboard says 1969 Kaiser DJ-5A. I've been told that these were 2WD postal jeeps. I was also told they were automatics. This jeep has two shifters on the floor. I've looked at some pictures and this jeep looks like a CJ-5. It is 4WD and has an inline 4 cylinder. It has two seats up front, no top, and no doors. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Got pics? What's the serial on the tub (plate on firewall)? Does it match the serial number on the frame?? (stamped into the top of the right frame rail, straight down from the cowl/hood corner)

Could have been a tub swap, I know of one other DJ5 to CJ5 that was done by a forum member (DrewDog)... :)

    Welcome aboard!

Why was it ID'd as a DJ-5A? VIN alone won't work.

DJ's weren't just postal Jeeps. They were just 2WD Jeeps.

As Lynn indicated tub swaps are easy. As are VIN tag swaps.

of course a tub swap won't get you a jail sentence, a vin tag swap will.

Eugene is a "Commando" by the VIN...

    Sparky,

I know it does and I'm not above it. I do think we make lite of it and open our mouths about it a little too often. I think alot of people don't realize that it is a felony.

I think you are being a little harsh here, and a bit rude....... It's up to you to do what you please, just like anyone else......
In this state, as long as you have a VIN tag and title to match, you can register it.......

I know a gent who totaled his Willys wagon; bought it back, salvaged title. Swapped a good body onto the original frame. Tried to do the "right" thing and not switch the vin plates. Filed endless DMV paperwork. blah blah blah.....
Well let's just say with the amount of DMV paperwork in his glovebox, the last time he got stopped, he begged the CHP to write the ticket so he could go to court and finally get it all straightened out; the officer
declined. He had his paperwork in order!
this went on for several years.....

Wished he'd swapped the tag from the totalled body and put it on the "new" body?

That's my point, do it and don't talk about it. Right or wrong, it is a serious crime. The law wasn't written for jeeps and jeepers but is on the books just the same.

You can do it legally. Frame #, body #, VIN tag#, does not matter.

There is a proper way to do this. My '65 is from Michigan and has a 4wd Hardware Body on her. The VIN tag was lost and is probably floating around my Dad's workshop back in Fenton, MI. When I took Betsy to the DMV for California plates, they couldn't find the VIN tag, so I had to take her in for DMV inspection.

I set-up an appointment, took her in and the DMV mechanics put her up on the lift and looked for the VIN on the frame etc. Not finding anything, they issued me a new dataplate riveted to the door frame and away I went. I did bring in the Michigan title with me and had no problems. I don't even think it cost me anything.

Do it right, stay legal, don't try to buy (or sell) a data (VIN) plate or title through the for sale section and BE POLITE in your posts.
