Question

I pulled the engine out of my M38A1 to replace the rear main seal and clutch. As I was there I put new main bearings and rod bearings in it. My question is as I was checking crankshaft end play I came up with 003 thousands I know the spec is 004 to 006 thousands. Should I order 002 thousands shim or put it together.

 

.003 is less than .004-.006.

 

If you're going through the trouble to do this, you may as well do it right

First describe how you checked the end play.

 

I checked the end play with a daily indicator at front of the crankshaft. And I checked it with a feeler gage at the front main cap.

 

My philosophy generally is that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Does it turn freely with the .003? That is pretty darn close to .004, depending how hard you try.
