That looks to be the shortest bearing available. I can't really see the clutch disc orientation from the pictures. The only thing that
really stands out from the pictures, is the transmission front bearing retainer/snout. Though used in all kinds of GM vehicles, non of them
had the extra thick flywheel of the oddfire V6. The flywheel pushes the clutch cover to the rear and the retainer. I believe there are
shorter GM bearing retainers available. Perform some measurement to determine where the throwout bearing will ride on the front
bearing retainer. I remember something from years ago about having the correct retainer.

Currently the bearing is smashed against the bearing retainer and the other side is smashed into the clutch fingers. There is zero gap.

the picture of the disc is another I tried but shows the orientation. Concrete would be the flywheel side.

mom wondering if the other retained brings the shaft closer to the trans?

I have a couple 420's I've been tripping over lately, so I went and looked. Hard to tell on yours, but here is the measurement for the retainer. I have used these on 3 jeeps with no issue. What's the groove on the end? What's that from? One thought, as already said, if the disc was in backwards, it could be pushing the fingers out, reducing the throwout clearance. Also, if it's coming out, you could dummy the whole thing on the floor with some straight edges.

Now that I see your above disc photo, you have it right. Besides, I think it interferes with the cover if you try backwards.

Stock 10.4" clutch cover. Relaxed and sitting face down on the floor. Measures 2.20" from the floor to the end of the tangs.

2 other loose ones I have, as well as 2 on trans, are shorter, trans face to bearing face.

Not sure if this is helpful but this is from the fingers to the disc.

I think that would explain it. I've never run into a wrong retainer. And none of my retainers in my spare parts is like yours. Learn something every day. If you want to try one of these, let me know.

You can see from yours and Tim's pictures where the release bearing rode in its original configuration.
I think it has to do with the oddfire flywheel thickness.

So if it turns out it isn’t the retainer and is the flywheel how do I get around it? So far out of my wheelhouse.
