The one I have has a spur gear I believe. But I would have to go look to be sure.

Looking down into the case, the PTO has a straight cut spur gear that slides to engage the PTO. I’ve separated the T14 from the 20, just to look at the innards. The tranny is junk but the 20 gears look good, and the lube is OK.

@Ol Fogie - I don’t think I’d trade. I have to see what shape my other D20 is in before any decisions are made regarding this setup. If that one is good, I’ll probably sell the whole works: t-case, PTO and winch.

When/or if you decide to sell your setup, If someone should be interested that has a jeep pickup or maybe a jeepster you could tell them I would trade PTO's with them. Thanks

My crazy thinking is Jpet gears might work (they only replace the helical gears) with the pto winch up front and a powered trailer behind... it would not be as low as the d18 gears but it would be lower and retain the pto winch...

The rear d20 output would be low and neutral only but that's fine for a trailer. One would need to use D18 shafts, front/ rear output and mill the case a little here and there

My late friend Steve had a 70's era V8 CJ5 that I drove a few times. I could easily get 2-low if I wasn't deliberate in shifting.

Ditto, it was noted back in the late 70's, that a 2 lo was there, but not detented. I used it some. I always had trouble getting it into 4 low. so the 2 lo was useful.
Since I installed the twin stick, shifting has been great.

    quick off topic question,
Can the shift rails of the D20 be removed without full disassembly?

Short answer. No. You have to disassemble the entire transfer case.

I think this needs to be explored further.

2 low is quite useful :D especially if you don't have power steering.
