Is this the AMC axle or the Dana 44?

Dana 44, I was just on the Jeep Wrangler TJ board, and one post mentioned that since the guy was working on a Dana44 he didn't have a crush sleeve, just a shim stack. ???

    Too Many Questions tonight.
there are two large washers, part numbers indicate they are oil slingers. When I tore down this axle there were no parts like this on the pinion shaft, is that where they go.
I looked at the Yukon installation instructions online, it is all generality's and no specifics. no mention of slingers and talks about crush sleeves. No Help!

The old D44s don't use crush sleeves, they use shims to set preload. Much better IMO. The two big "washers" are oil slingers that go on the pinion gear.

While I believe there is a place for "purity", that certainly doesn't describe me. Carry on!

got one of the Dana 44 backing plates modified to accept the 78 AMC E-brake cables. I also upgraded the wheel cylinder from 15/16 to 1 1/8.

    one down, one to go.

My luck is still in this unlucky streak. I tried putting the pinion gear in, .... got the shim pack adjusted for proper depth and torque. yea, !!! so lets put the seal in, ... smack it with a 4x4 on top , ...... put the wood away, look back at the seal, ... there's about 5 or 6 pieces of wood splinters between the seal and oil slinger, and down into the bearing....... :censored: Sooooooooo tear it all apart, clean the bearing, remove seal, and order a new one. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I wanted to get started on installing the trutrac, and I was going to try using the shims from the old carrier, ..... but when I went to get it , ... the shim was gone. So, I guess I'll go the long route.

If you measured the backlash prior to pulling the carrier, you're half way there.
If you're gonna toss your old carrier bearings, you can hone out the insides and use them as set up bearings.

I got the 3.54 ring gear installed on the Tru Trac carrier. Then after many trials and errors, got a backlash of .006. Ran a pattern and it is in the center, .... maybe a little low but I'm gonna go with it.

Next is to put the plasma cutter together, remove old perches and install new ones with 7-8 deg diff tilt.

Sorry no pic this time, got caught up helping my son do ball joints on his wife's car.

I’m redoing a flanged Dana 44 now, as well.

Are those inner seals an SKF 15142, by chance? I thought I was ordering outer seals but the OD is too small. I have since ordered Timken 9912S seals.

All Right,..... 1st just let me say the Bestarc 500DP is awesome! after I put it all together, no two connections were the same. I am cutting spring perches, witch measure almost 1/4" thick. Convert that number to mm and the book said to set amps to 30, and I set the presure to 40 psi, (value came from a YT video) and it cut like butter. Here is my first cut attempt, I stopped a couple of times, just to make sure I didn't accidentally cut into the axle tube.

This is what it looked like before grinding

And then here is the new perches tacked into place, I will fully weld them in tomorrow.

Now, I just need to find an 1 1/2 bolt

My '71 rear axle uses all '72 and later axle parts. This is a good thing as there are three different sets of parts listed for the '71.

FYI: NAT A10 unit bearing w/retainer, NAT 481837 inner seal, NAT 9912 outer seal.

More work, I noticed there wasn't an axle breather, there were two 1/4x20 tapped holes, one on each axle tube. The Pass side hole is for mounting the brake tee. So I drilled out the driver side hole and tapped it for 1/4 npt, and put in a hose barb for a breather.

After welding on the new perches, I installed the axle housing in place and had a problem, the new perches are the anti-wrap style and I could not get the u-bolts to pull down to the spring. It looks like it is sitting on the spring bolt but it's not.

So it looks like I have to remove the housing and cut the perches down to match the old ones.

and yes that is an all thread u-bolt, I have new ones on order, these are the ones that got me home from Ca. because no body had what I needed.
