I have a similar problem to the other post below. Old 9pack springs in a 59. The springs hangers, shackles all shot. Even the shocks and shock mounts are rusted out and need to be replaced.

So of course my first question is regardless of how wide or minor modifications, whats the best springs to use for a stock looking height and decent ride on pavement. Not asking for buick road masters ride quality, just decent and cheap.
Originals, Intermediate cj springs? Wrangler springs? something wierd like a ford pinto spring? Whats a good place to start.

Also how does spring width and length affect a jeep. As in what about totally incorect springs like the 52 inch chevy springs I have. Bad idea I know, but seriously any good sites to teach me about suspension design and ride quality. Any suggestions or advice from the group would be appreciated.

Finally if I decide to go stock what's the best place to get all the original replacements.

Thanks for any help and information.

Lots of talk about the YJ springs.
    Mine rides nice.
Doesn't Rancho have some stock replacement springs too?

IHMO going with YJ isn't going to be cheap...as you'll need to do quite a bit of fabrication to run them.

Look at a set of 1" Rancho springs...usually you can find deals with the shocks thrown in which makes them a bit cheaper than going the stock replacement route.

Longer springs will ride better....one option is the Holbrook Long Leaves (Man...I should hit them up for a new site... you can't dig that up via Google!).

Mike is right about the extra modification for the wider YJ springs. I had an 1983 CJ that I done just that but went with the springover also. Man did it ride good but I think the springover helped that the most.

Anything 'custom' is going to take a lot of work and maybe a few tries to get the right spring combo for ride and height. If you know someone locally and can check it out and possibly ride in it then copy it that would be the best way to go. Leafs are fairly simple. Just watch your caster angles on the front and the pinion angle in the rear. Probably the hardest part is making sure your axle center is where you want it after the spring compresses. Other than that make some decent mounts and you should be good. All depends on how custom you want to go.

Although, if you have worn out stock springs you might want to just try some new replacement springs, bushings and shocks. It will make a world of difference and its a lot easier and cheaper to do.

Unfortunately there is no 'best' spring, its subjective to the owner. :D

I have the replacement 1" lift Rancho springs. Rides as well as I expect a old Jeep to ride, and a heck of a lot better than the pieced together springs that were on it when I bought it.

    Thanks for the info everyone.

I have never seen a 1 inch rancho kit, but I will check their site soon. that may be a nice option.
