Here’s a few. Took me 2 years. Took everything down to the last nut and bolt.

I definitely appreciate all the advice along the way. Looking back, I wish I would’ve put in the effort to finding this power lock before I rebuilt my Dana 44. Oh well, such is life.

I asked this question earlier in the conversation. When I rebuilt this Power Lock, I noticed Im unable to turn the inner workings (spider gears, clutches and cups) by hand when I secure the power lock in a vice and place an axle into it. It seems extremely tight after I torqued the bolts to 60 ft pounds. is that normal? Did I tighten the bolts too tight? I can turn the spider gears by hand in my open carrier, so I'm concerned that this power lock will all be alwyas be "engaged" when I install it into my 44. Does it need more weight like wheels and tires to make it spin freely? Do the clutches need to be broken in to be able to spin free?

I cannot turn the axles independently by hand on mine either....I wanted it tight, so I am not too worried. I did not add any additional shims or flip a bellvue disk - just a completely by the book shim/disk stack. I don't remember if it was from Nick M or from the FSM, but there is a specified torque measurement needed to get the 'differential' action. The set of stub axles I borrowed from nick had a hex bolt welded on the end so you could test the torque measurement in the vice with a torque wrench....IIRC, Mine came out higher than the spec by a decent amount, but that is okay as I want it a bit tight....Also, the friction modifier can change those numbers. I used some friction modified in gear oil during assembly, and it was probably mixed with a bit higher ratio of friction modifier than normal, and that can increase your friction.

Thanks for that. That makes me feel a little bit better. I was lying awake last night thinking that if this power lock doesn’t turn internally, that meant that the rear would be “locked up”and that’s not a good situation. I too added I’d say about an ounce of friction modifier into about, I don’t know, less than a quart of 90 weight when I assembled the clutch discs into the power lock. I’m thinking when I get the axles back in and the tires bolted back up, I might be able to see things turning inside before I put the cover back on the differential.

Guess that depends on desired use...but from my perspective of having full lockers in both the front and rear of the CJ, I find limited slips to often be kind of disappointing from an off-road perspective as they don't lock up enough. I am not sure that with a 'stock' style build/disk stack, that you can really get them so tight that they would act like a spool. In other words, I don't think its going to be a problem for street use, and thus the reason I am okay using one in my 58 wagon. If you decide its acting a bit too tight, you can always use add more friction modifier and that will decrease the friction between the disks allowing more slip.

OK, now that makes a little more sense. I’ve got a a new 4 ounce bottle of limited slip modifier that I was going to add when I refilled the diff. In your opinion, how much should I add? All 4 ounces or less? Keep in mind, I will be doing 99 percent street driving.

I'd use whatever the bottle says is the recommended amount....if for whatever reason it is too tight (which I think is unlikely), you can add more friction modifier to the oil.

Liking your jeep! Let the powerlock break in. Tight on the rear should be fine.

This comes from the accepted use of the word "lockers" and folks not fully understanding how a limited slip works.
There are several subtle driving techniques which one can use to fool or trick the limited slip to transfer torque to the non-spinning wheel.
    Just takes practice.

Considering I wasn't as impressed with the traction gains of the lockrite I put in the front as I was hoping, there is no doubt a driver issue!

Note- I was reversed in my discussion of friction modifier......If you need to reduce the friction to allow more slip, you need to ADD more friction modifier. I went back and edited my previous posts to reflect that.

I used my brakes on/off/on/off in diff situations and learned what to do to get all fours locked when needed. Loved my limited slips that came stock with my Tux.
