Just lubed the CJ5 today and discovered one point that wouldn’t take grease. Upon investigating that I came across a thread about over-greasing your your rear axle/bearing point leading to your brakes locking up.

Is this a possibility on the CJ5? If so, what’s the best way to I check to make sure I didn’t get grease into the brake shoes?

You sure the grease point isn't just blocked?

At least some 5's had the tiny relief hole in the axle tube, as shown in your link. On the militaries it may even have a fitting, but my memory is fuzzy on that.

Also I think there *ought* to be a grease/oil catch shield inside the brake backing plate with a drain opening dumping to the outside lower back.

    YMMV.

    To check, pull the drum.

Yep. Any excess should just exit the relief. If it's getting into the brakes, time for a new seal.

It looks like some old grease was coming back out of the grease point that wouldn’t take the grease. Found a tool called a grease hammer that might be able to free it up.

I might go ahead and pull the drum just to make sure.

The steel plunger deal should be used with pb blaster or a similar light oil but in my experience growing up typically the grease inside thenbad fitting is dry and it all needs gone through.

Welcome from Michigan, the FSM says just a little grease is all you need on the rear axel brings, one pump or so, not to over grease it. Good Luck.
