Gentlemen: I have a '65 rust free stock Jeep with the F134 engine. I'm thinking of upgrading for improved driveability and mild off roading. At the risk of sounding unmanly does anyone know of a person/company where I might have this done correctly at a reasonable price? I doubt my abilities are up to this - I'm in VA.

    Thanks, Jim

Nothing wrong with admitting the limit of your abilities Jim.

    Welcome!

Now having said that. I'm sure someone in VA can help you out with an answer. We have several members in that area.

If your not pressed for time you might see about finding a person like one of us that will do it on the side for you. What your looking for is considered 'special' and someone who has done this a couple times in the past will avoid the pitfalls that will give problems in the future.

I have done the 'swap' for a couple folks and am now to the point that once I have the parts it's a 3 weekend job - 'course I specialize in Flatties.

Don't be afraid to want to see the work they have done in the past.

Hi Jim...welcome to the board from another CJ6 owner. Do you have any pics of your rig?

In addition to logging progress on my own 6...I also post pics of other CJ6's I run across to my site.

Good luck on the repower...any engines in mind yet? I bought mine with the Chevy 4.3 already installed, and am planning on getting the fuel injection back on it this summer (PO went with a carb).

    Hi Jim Conway,
What part of Va. do you hail from? We are in SW Va. in Roanoke. We Know one expert engine shop here in town and another general truck and car repair shop that is reputable. (they've both done some work for us in the past.)

like Peter and Beth said where abouts in this fine state do you live? Here in central Va I know of a guy who might be able to do a swap, but I'm not sure if he will.

Welcome from Sugerloaf, CA. I'd go with the :v6: Dauntless, as it has plenty of power and will go anywhere. :D

Tough to beat the power to weight ratio of the 225 V6 or Vortec V6.
It must be raining 6's. I bought a 74 CJ6 w/ 304 V8 because it had the steel 15X8 wheels that I needed to fit over 11" drum brake conversion. Sold it and found another. Then my buddy said he was selling a CJ6A w/ 4WD conversion. Another buddy has a CJ6 he wants to sell and I know where 2 more might be.

Welcome aboard from Cheapeake! If "mild" four-wheeling is all you're going to do, I'd stick with the 134 and have fun. You'll be amazed at how great a 'wheeler they are in factory form, especially with the 5.38 gears! If a swap is a must-have, the Dauntless is a great candidate for that factory look and fantastic down low torque off road. Keep in mind, your axles, tranny, etc were designed for the four cylinder, so consider those in the total equation. As far as a shop goes, try getting with the local rodders and see where they get their work done. They have a great network of shops/ services as most ALL of their mods are custom. At least it will get you headed in the right direction. Bottom line to all of it is to have fun first and foremost. Just my .02...

It's essentially the same drivetrain a later :v6: Jeep would have had from the factory - as long as it's in reasonable condition I wouldn't worry about it.

if the f head is shot, i would swap in the dauntless, if it just needs a littkle rebuild i would leave it stock unless you plan on going with some major mods......................................................got pics?????

Thanks you all for this warm welcome. I'm in Norfolk, VA. I'm thinking of a small V6 and I'd like to consider fuel injection. I'm thinking there is more than one original V6 (225,231?) and I'm sure there's some opinions on them. I had a 3B (4 cyl) on last years Jeep Jamboree in Nelson County and had trouble on the steeper stuff. Maybe look at doing brakes but was hoping to avoid the more serious stuff (axles...). Again I appreciate your welcome and comments.

    Thanks, Jim

The only factory installed V6 was the 225 odd fire..... ;)

If you want FI then swap in a Chevy 4.3L.

    Otherwise 225/231 w/ a Rochester 2G.
