    Hi guys,

The paint on my “new” 1980 cj5 seems to be otherwise in great shape, but there’s one spot on the hood that appears to be rusting under the paint.
I’ve been quoted 800-1300 for “repair/repainting” - should I bite the bullet and do this, or just buy an aftermarket hood and have it painted? Pics attached.

hopefully this is the right forum - wasn’t sure where to put it.

Get another quote. Or I'll do it for ten bucks if you get the paint.

    Not seeing any pics.

Aftermarket hoods are ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. Do what you can to save the old iron.

I'm having a hard time swallowing the concept of somebody quoting you $800-1300 for prepping and repainting **One** Panel. That just seems way way way out of line. Unless the rust repair is far more involved than your description is leading me to believe.

I would watch facebook & craigslist for a used hood then repaint it. Check car-part.com to scan the salvage yards in your area. An original hood in good shape will probably fit better than reproduction.

I'm trying to envision the hood orientation from your pictures. Is that the top back, in other words, the top at the hinge edge? Additional picture "zoomed out" for overall location may help define the problem. Was the repair/repaint estimate just for the hood only?

No it’s in the middle, about 2x4” just on top of the cowl there. Hate the idea of someone repainting the whole hood and it not matching the original paint everywhere else. Biggest fear…

Add a custom 'flame' job, or find a trim decal you like, to cover it.

Get a paint strip disk from Lowe’s and some rust converter (many types available). Strip, treat rusted areas and spray with primer. Spray can automotive paint from AutoParts store or go to auto paint store that can match paint ( many do). All this for a couple hundred dollars at the most. And new skills for you = Priceless.

If the rest of the jeep is faded and such just do a soft edged repair on the hood and buff after. Search “blending auto paint” it can be done with most any type of paint . Even if the color is off a tad with a good blend it isn’t as noticeable.

I've had a great experience with Ray's Auto Paint Supply in Culver City. He's an old school kinda guy that has been mixing paint for decades. If anyone can mix you up a batch of touch up, he's the guy.
