Play In The Steering Sector Shaft

    The set screw (or the Tightsteer that replaces it) should keep the pins firmly in the worm gear. If the pins are worn then that is where your steering slop is coming from. See fireball's post above on fixing the pins.

    Before installing TightSteer, the play in the sector shaft was only present when the steering wheel and tires were in the straight on position. When you would turn the wheels slightly the play would go away. The play I saw before removing the steering box cover was about the same as what you're seeing now in the video.

    I'm now worried that what was/is going on is that when you turn the wheel the worm gear and pins push on each other and it pushes the sector shaft towards the cover where the set screw is which makes sense and explains why the play goes away. However, when I installed TightSteer and initially screwed it in it seemed to relieve the play, but when I followed their instructions and backed out the TightSteer one full turn the play returned. I guess I would have the completely remove the sector shaft to inspect the pins to see if they are worn.

    I would suggest a complete rebuild of the Ross box. It is not a complex mechanism. Moses Ludel did a video on it about 10 years ago. You can search on our forum and youtube for others, but Moses Ludel's is probably the most authoritative. He has also written several jeep rebuilding books which you can find on Amazon and Ebay.

    The sector shaft should be held against the worm gear by the set screw when the steering is centered, moving the steering off center either way should feel looser- driving down the road this is normally covered by the wheel caster trying to push the wheels back to the straight ahead position.

    The tightsteer adds a stiff spring and a center pin to push the sector shaft against the worm when steering is off center in order to tighten the feeling up a bit in turns.

    If your steering feels loose in straight ahead and stiffens up in turns then that would indicate either your steering box centering adjustment is of or more likely the pins on the sector shaft have worn down into oval shapes that will bind up in the worm when the set screw is adjusted to set correctly set the sector shaft end play.

    best plan is to pull all the steering apart, replace the worn parts and then reassemble/adjust per factory procedure.
