I have a 64 CJ5 with the F134 engine, T90 transmission, and a Spicer 18 transfer case with a Warn overdrive(thank goodness). The problem that i am having is a loud whining noise coming from the transmission area. Specificly when it reaches about 45 to 50 MPH in 3rd gear. Then gets even louder when shifted into overdrive. Once going 50+, the noise will only appear when triing to cruise at the same speed. If accelerating or completely letting off of the gas, the noise stops. After a little bit of research, I think that the transfer case needs to be rebuilt. JP magazine strongly recomends Novak Adaptors for the rebuild kit even though it is more expensive (about $185.00). Am i on the right track or is it a bearing in the tranny making this noise?

    Thanks for any imput, Mark

It sounds like some gear wear or maybe a bearing going south. I have a 56 CJ5 and it is doing the same thing. However I rarely get it up to highway speeds so it has not bothered me enough to rebuild it. Seems like it dose worse when it a hot day and I am traveling at speeds around 55.

One of the things I have seen advertised on the displays in the Auto Parts store is the “Slick 50-gear oil” and the “Lucus gear oil”. I have kind of been thinking about changing out my oil with one of these products. Any of you other guys had any luck with those kinds of gear oils?

I think Mobile One even has a synthetic gear oil.

Will be interested to hear how the guys respond to your post.

I have the Lucas gear oil in both axles, transfercase and transmission, works good for me so far.

I have the same problem in my "55. Thought it was a tranny or T-case noise, so had both rebuilt, the noise was still there. (Very loud gear whine at about 30 mph). Turns out it was a bad ring and pinion in the rear end, the noise travels up the hollow driveshaft and sounds like it's coming from the tranny.Have the R&P checked before tearing the tranny apart

I did drain and fill all four gear oil spots on the jeep a few months ago. that did'nt really help with the noise. Unfortunatly after the fact, I learned synthetic is the way to go. O well, next time. However, at the same time, I did replace both diff cover gaskets to try to get rid of a couple of the Jeeps many oil leaks. The ring and pinion gears looked to be OK at that time (no obvios wear), so i'm still thinking its coming from either the t-case or tranny.

The first thing I'd do is try to isolate the noise. The easiest test is to put the TC in neutral and run through the gears to see if the noise is there. If it is, it makes the transmission the most likely culprit. Then disconnect your drive shafts, put the TC in gear, and try again. You could try removing the driveshafts and listening while someone tows the Jeep, though I've never heard of anyone doing that. That might confirm a bad pinion bearing or such.

I had a similiar problem but mine was not really a whine but more like a constant grinding noise in any gear and any speed. After tearing into it I could tell that rust and water over the years had taken its toll. Had to do a complete disassembly and replace mainshaft bearing, input shaft bearing and the needle bearings in the Cluster gear. Also, went ahead and went thru transfer case but the noise was coming from the bearings in the transmission. Very fortunate because had a buddy that knew how to put it back togather.
