Bob - you have been looking for a non-traditional way to build your wagon with a more street friendly, modern feel with no 'antiquated' technology like sm465/D18s and WarnODs - this is one way to get there. Not sure what your rear axle set-up is (Scout D44?), and if an offset rear axle would be problematic given the additional length starts to get used up with the 5 speed and TC....Kyle would probably be looking to swap some axles, but even if only temporary, he could run the AMC era D44 rear which is centered for a bit with moderate lift/tire set-up...37s might be a different world in that regard.

Kyle can speak for why he is doing it, but I would do it because having a 5 speed OD gives all the same benefits of the granny low 4speed, better street driving with a better shift feeling, and you get the OD without a D18 and Warn OD. Plus, the engine, trans, TC can pretty much all be natively mated together so no need for expensive adapters like the SM465/D18 etc. For the cj5, its too short to run the 5 speed, so none of us really look to go that route and you don't hear much about it. I'll be interested to see the TC set-up and how it works with the TDK cj5 frame and AMC axles - or if there are already swaps ready to go in that regard.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

    I have a later model NV4500 with gearing at: 5.61, 3.04, 1.67, 1, .74, R 5.61
The 5.61 1st gear coupled to a 4:1 transfer case and 4.56 gears will give me a 102:1 crawl ratio.
A 37" tire (36.5" tall) with 4.56 gears and .74 overdrive will cruise the freeway at 2200 rpm while going 70mph.

My 1st 4x4 build was a 63 Scout with a D18, and we swapped in a centerd 44. Worked fine with the longer wheelbase.

Only 3 Jeeps? If you stop now you may be able to avoid full blown J.A.S. which I came down with a few years ago. There is no cure for the malady, only treatment which involves more Jeeps.

All seriousness aside that is a nice looking CJ6.

BTW - I removed the side steps from my CJ5 yesterday in preparation for installing the sliders.

Nick's tux had the 60-40, and we always felt like we were going to slide out, so I took it out and sold it to a forum member. I still have one in my '67, and it's great for the dog, and when we had small kids, for light wheeling.

I'm close to that with 31.5's and 3.54's with my current 465. But no where near that crawl ratio, but let's be real; it's a Wagon. My stock D300 will work just fine for mild trail sorties.
Freeway cruising in a CJ? There was a time when I would, and did...

I've seen that 6 before. Was it listed for sale here in NorCal at some point? Nice score, a 6 would be so much more fun to build, that 3 mile long driveshaft just looks so appealing :D

The 2.62 D30 and 6.5 sm465 gives you plenty of crawl, even with 3.54 gears - especially with tires smaller than 35s. You should put it to use and beat that wagon up a bit.
I think 3.54 makes a nice gearing for wagons with an sbc350 (or maybe even a 305).....the 4.27s in mine seem a bit too low, even with the OD. It'll help if I upsize the tires a bit, but still, even in the 32" range, its not going to make a big difference. If one was running a shorter stroke sbc - like a 283 or 327 that needed a bit more rpm - then the lower gears would be better. The longer stroke v8s pull hard down to pretty low rpms without lugging, and I think the 3.54s are pretty sweet - could pretty much skip the OD if you wanted.

It was on FB market place for a month or so..... at a price that was much higher than I wanted to pay considering the modifications I planned.
I made an offer based on the only 2 things I wanted, TDK chassis and a rust free CJ6 tub. My offer was padded a little bit as I hope to recoup some funds when I sell off engine, trans, axles ect....
The owner said he appreciated the offer but thought he could do better.
Somehow the conversation turned to hunting, fishing, guns ect..... He offered me a beer.....next thing I knew we had split a 6 pack and we were checking out his vintage lever action rifle collection.
As evening fell (I had been there for 3 hours already...) He offered me another drink and I said I had to go, He said one more and we can talk about you buying my jeep.
To my surprise he took my original offer and I drove it home.

I was talking with a family friend a month or so ago and let him know I was looking for a few odds and ends as well as an 8274 winch. Russel is in the process of moving 50 yrs of 4wd parts and projects....
Well that conversation paid off, today he dropped off an 8274. It's a little rough and needs some repairs, but the free price tag was too good to pass up!
The only information I was given was: "It was acting up and it quit on me, it's been sitting for 20 yrs in the shed."
I am going to treat it as a good rebuild-able core and treat it to the latest upgraded parts.
For now it will go on the shelf until the time to rebuild comes.

Nice, those things are popular nowadays with the flatfendering crowd, which has driven the price up. I think you can get just about everything to refresh it, including a new motor.

My Dad has one sitting in one of his sheds that came off his 71 Blazer. I need to pull it out and clean it up. Might need it for a upcoming project.

Good score! I bought the 15K industrial winch motor #70865 and the updated contactor control pack for my last rebuild. Haven't gotten around to installing it on my JK yet, but that motor by the specs should be a step above even the 9.5XP motor. Only thing I'm worried about now is sending the brake assembly off into the woods if the snap ring fails under a bigger load.
