Hello and thanks for taking time to read this.

Not knowing that Walcks was going out of business I bought a complete new wiring harness for my 1970 CJ5 Dauntless V6. I am not able to contact them for customer support.

The Jeep came with a 37 amp alternator that had only (2) wires connecting it, the new harness came with (6) wires for the alternator per the schematic included. The schematic shows both the 37 amp and 55 amp alternators.

    The schematic lists:

1- Regulator terminal auxiliary ( which is shown as being used on the 37 amp alternator ) GREY
    2- Output terminal RED
3- Regulator terminal ( shown for the 55 amp ) GREY
    4- Ground Terminal BLACK/WHITE TRACER
    5- Field terminal GREEN Clip
    6- Ground Terminal BLACK/WHITE TRACER

The actual wires in the harness are:

    (2) GREY
    (2) RED
    (1) BLACK/WHITE TRACER
    (1) GREEN

The GREEN is easy, it's the FIELD TERMINAL that clips to the new 37 amp Alternator.
BLACK also self explanatory it's the ground.

    My question's are:

What to do with the 2nd RED output wire that came with the harness?
What to do with the 2nd GREY wire that came with the harness?

Are these redundant? If so, does it matter which I use?

    THANK YOU!

Somewhere on this site is a wiring diagram for the V6 models. Compare that to what was included in your kit. There are three wires connecting the regulator and alternator.
    Technical Index | ECJ5 (earlycj5.com)

If you're not trying to stay original, I would strongly encourage the replacement of the externally regulated alternator with a 10SI or 12SI alternator since you are doing a rewire. You can eliminate the external voltage regulator and simplify wiring.

Ditto this. I put a 100 amp 1 wire on my cj and I have been happy with it.

Edit: I should probably add that not everyone likes the 1 wire alternators. They wont start charging until your engine hits about 1200 RPM and your alternator charging light won't work.
But they're super simple to install & hook up. Regardless of whether you use the 1 wire or 3 wire, it's a significant upgrade from the puny stock Motorola unit!

As Walcks is no more....you could try to contact KW as they bought out Walcks stuff....I think they would be willing to offer a bit of phone help?

Hello and thank you all for your replies. I have a new harness and an new alternator, I would just like to make what I have work, it's being built with an MD Juan Willys MB body, so no extra electrical load, especially since I intend to use LED headlights and tail lights. The Technical index doesn't have any info on the alternator?
Yes, I tried Kaiser Willys, they bounced me around 3 people, the last person said I should buy their 2 wire alternator, after the first person said I could not make the 2 wire alternator that came with the Jeep work with the Walcks harness, so I bought an alternator that is like the one in the Walcks example, and still have duplicated wires, why (2) RED 12gauge output wires? Why (2) voltage regulator wires?

I don't know why you have duplicate output and regulator wires.
Here's the Renegade wiring diagram. The 1970 should be the same or very similar.
I think the wires from the alternator to the regulator are red, black and green. Somebody correct me if I'm mistaken.

They do have them that will start charging without being revved. I got mine new from a local to me automotive electrical shop a number of years ago.

On mine, the wires on the voltage regulator going out to the plug are red, black and green. From the plug to the alternator they are black with a white stripe, green with a white stripe, and tan.

Wires going to the left go to the regulator.
FYI this is a 1970 Commando, not a CJ, but it should be the same.

Thank you for your post, do I understand correctly that the Ammeter gets it's signal from the starter ( return path back to the battery ) rather than directly from the Alternator?

Thank you all for your replies, I think what I'm going to do is buy a wire tracer, testing the wire harness wire that is connected with the positive battery cable at the starter, and see which of the red output wires at the alternator I get a signal at, and do the same at the voltage regulator.

    Great pic, shows it all
    Black/white= ground (from voltage regular)
Green/white = field (from voltage regulator)
Light tan = from voltage regulator (on small + post)
Exciter wire, the other light tan (second wire on small + post)
Heavy red main + post = to starter
Heavy red main + post= to back of breaker on light switch

My ‘70 CJ5 is the same.

here’s a pic of the wires going from Alternator to voltage regulator

THANK YOU VERY MUCH THAT'S MY ALTERNATOR Colojeepguy, and the number of wires (6) is correct for the Walcks harness. I think the regulator wires are gray not tan, mine are gray.

Again, thank you all for your replies!!
