IMG_2749.jpeg I am getting ready to put a locker in the rear of my CJ with the Dana 44 19 spline. I understand how it comes apart but how to you get the shafts out of the axle? I just did the 27 in the front and that was easy, just grab the axle and pull.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

Get a loaner fwd hub puller and slide hammer. back the center nut off till flush with shaft Put puller on and be patient, sing it a sweet melody. Eventually it will pop with as much anger as applied when least expected. Pull backing plates and all then use the slide hammer to pull the shaft.
Shims under backing plates go on as they came off.

I never had much success popping those hubs off with a slide hammer. You need a good hub puller for most and if you do a search here there should be a lot of threads on that. As Joe states, leave that axle nut on there a few threads when pulling those. The can fly a good distance if you don't and you definitely don't want to be the backstop.

The big puller that you beat/tighten with a 2lb sledge is usually required to remove the hub from the tapered axle.

I believe the original poster was asking how to pull the axles not how to remove the hub.

Generally you start by removing the hubs. :sneak:

If you don't have a slap hammer, you can use the drum as a slap hammer after you pull the hub. Put the drum back on backwards, put the nut back on, sit down, and use two hands to pull the drum against the nut to release the axle.
