Someone else can give you more detail but you've got to start out at the wheels. Take off the wheel and brake drum. On mine (flanged d44) it's easy to see what has to come apart once you have the drum off. I assume yours is a two piece but may be easy to see also.

It isn't that hard but I can't describe the details.

Note, be careful when you put them back in - don't push too hard & make sure they're lined up correctly.

Taking the cover off has nothing to do with it as you don't have C-clips on your stock rear end.

Assuming it's all stock, you need to take off the little cap on each axle end, then the cotter pin, then the nut & washer. You'll usually need a hub puller to pull the hub. So much force can be released that I usually put the nut back on just a turn or two to keep it from flying across the garage when it pops. (On the newer one-piece versions there's a hole in the axle flange to access the backing plate bolts with a socket.) Then either remove the brake shoes or work around them, but you'll need to take off the 6 bolts (possbly 4 on yours) holding on the backing plate. The backing plate & another ring (on some models) act as the axle bearing retainer so once that's all out of the way (usually there's enough "slack" in the brake pipe to move the backing plate off the axle shaft & get it tied up out of the way) you can pull the axle shaft. Usually you'll need a slide hammer to pop it out........you can put a brake drum on backwards with just a few turns of the lug nut nuts & use it as a slide hammer. The picture in your manual will make this all make sense.

It's also in here, as they didn't change much back then:
