Well with that being the case, it sounds like the tappet for the intakes is a one-piece unit, unlike the exhausts. And it sounds like that one tappet is severely damaged or worn. The only "right" way to fix it is to replace the bad tappet and you have to pull the cam to do that.

Is it a big job? Sort of. You'll have to pull the oil pan and front cover, and the cam will slide right out. Of course all the tappets are going to drop out as soon as you do that, but if you're going to go that far I would replace all 8 anyway.

    I would rate this as a 3-4 six-pack job. YMMV. ;)

Is this particular pushrod shorter than the others maybe?

(It's always the simple things that'll get you...)

it has to be a problem with the push rod seating on/in the tappet
must be collpased/worn thru as stated
there is no other way for the push rod to "go" anywhere

Use clothes pins to hold the tappets up while pulling the cam

Well it sounds like the consensus is that the lifter/tappet is worn through. As I said before, this is on a FC150 so pulling the cam is a major ordeal. It basically requires pulling the engine. I am not going to do that so I will build up the pushrod so it won't fit through the worn tappet. Worst case scenario, I will just remove the pushrod and run on 3 cyls. I have probably been running that way this whole time. Thanks for the pics and suggestions. I would still like to see a pic of an intact intake tappet if anyone has one.

    Thanks,
    Tom

Here is a picture of the modified pushrod.

It is installed and adjusted. I think I am going to need an additional 1/4" of length to make it work best. I could tell a definite difference in the exhaust smell and tone with the #2 cylinder functioning. I didn't realize the engine had a miss until I heard what it sounded like without one. Anyhow, we will see how long this repair lasts. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.
