t-case ?

    I'm (finally) getting down to the home stretch of rebuilding this dana 18 transfer case. Two questions:
    1. Front yoke nut. I'm reusing the small yoke from my old single stick on the new-to-me twin stick front housing. The 5/8" nut off the twin stick won't fit down in to the smaller yoke (the nut fits but there's no room to get a socket on it). The 5/8" nut off the old single stick does not have the fine thread pitch needed. None of the stores in town have this so I may end up grinding down the old nut to take a smaller socket.
    2. Where exactly do I put the sealant on the spines for the rear yoke? Just goop up the entire length of the spline? Or, put some on the ends after putting on the yoke? Or other?

    IIRC, I just put the yoke on most of the way, and put some RTV on the inside splines, about the last 1/2" or so. I then put some RTV under the washer for the yoke nut. No leaks there....

    Actually, if you put the sealant on the splines on the inside end of the yoke itself when you push it on it will force it out along the splines. If you put it on the splines on the shaft it will be forced in, and any excess will go inside the t-case. Probably won't hurt anything, just food for thought.

    OK, back to the nut question. It's a 3/4" not 5/8". I went to another hardware store last night and they have both coarse and fine thread nuts. I need one that is finer than fine. The one that came off takes a 1 1/4" socket which is too large to fit down in to the small yoke. So, I need an extra fine, 3/4" nut that takes a 1 1/8" socket or 1 1/16" socket.

    Is this something that's even made?

    I bought mine from my local Jeep place, small mom & pop, not a dealership. Specializes in older Jeeps. IIRC, it is recommended to change those with new ones....

    Krage and the like should have it....

    McMaster Carr has 3/4"x20 threads per inch that takes a 1" wrench in Stainless Steel. McMaster.com

    Someone jump in if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that these were a locking type nut. You don't want to put a regular nut on the output yokes. Might give you a rude surprise on the trail! :shock:

    Ok, I found the McMaster stainless nut - I had already looked there but not for stainless. Talking with the guys in the shop they said that they have had bad experience with stainless hardware galling (gauling?). Anyway, the threads may be ruined when this nut has to come off next time if its stainless. So, I'm still looking.

    The nut you found at the Jeepdoc I think is like one that I have that takes the socket that's too large to fit in the small yoke. I'll have to call or email them and find out for sure. I'll post what I find.

    I'm also considering sanding down the nut that I have so the smaller socket will work.

    :oops: Guess I should have re-read you post before offering advice.
    Wonder if there's enough meat to have a machine shop turn the yoke out just a little....

    For a few reasons (strength, cost) I would rather not turn down the yoke but I will take another look at it tonight. I may be able to have a friend turn down a socket so that it will fit inside the yoke.

    Bingo - here's the response back from Krage:

    The 3/4-20 shaft and nut are a machine thread, the nut #801367 is
    exactly what you need with the 3/4-20 threads and 1-1/8" hex. We have
    several in stock and can ship one to you immediately, if you are in Alaska . . . ."

    I've already ordered two of these this morning.
