Yep, find another axle!!!! You can see the marks on the carrier where the pinion went too far into the case and at the extreme, cocked enough to destroy the ring gear. I wouldn't guess there are too many salvagable parts in there but the axle shafts, spindles, hubs, knuckles are probably still ok.

You should be looking for a 78+ NARROW TRACK D30 axle. Daryl Flood (daryl on here) probably has one but he doesn't visit here too often these days. Nickmil would also be a good contact. Daryl lives in Bonny Lake which would be a little bit of a drive. You will undoubtedly need to change the gearing in any D30 to match your rear axle which probably sports 5.38's if stock.

why that isn't the picture I had asked for
shift rods in front of transfer case . just so we can see there rod location to determine
    if it's in neutral
and yes that front end is trash . but don't loose hope
that front was used all the way up to 71 model year
if your going down the rabbit hole , a 30 is a excellent upgrade

I read in the first post it is a '60 which would most commonly have a dana 25 (stamped on center casting web) with 5.38's till 62/63ish but time has a way with these things.

I say figure out what is going on in the transfercase then gut the front and run it 2wd only for a while till the green wears off.

I think I may have found a Dana 25 for $100, only 45 minutes from home! I'll keep everyone posted!

That would be our best bet! A D25 with 5.38 gears should be pretty common. Just pull the front cover to verify the ratio (count the ring gear teeth and pinion teeth) as the same as yours, and look for chipped/broken teeth, and make sure you can turn the driveshaft yoke smoothly by hand.
