I made all the attachments for the skid plate and painted up all the scars. I made a separate thread in this forum as I was working through the process. I ended up welding bolts into the rear crossmember for mounting points. It is all painted up and waiting to dry.

I painted my Saginaw gear box. I don’t think it needs any work. I will find out in a few months. EB36E090-F491-4F1D-B658-05CD38CC2625.jpeg
I installed the TC support so I have a place to sit when I pretend to drive it around. My rear diff has a small leak despite the lube locker gasket, so I know my jeep is still alive.

I had a lazy Easter weekend then put some time into the jeep at the end. Steering gearbox is installed.

I flipped the bolts on the rear shackles so the new rear gas tank won’t block me from being able to remove the bolts, but now the ends of the shackle bolts block me from getting the rear of the skid plate over the bolts I welded into the rear crossmember. Is there any reason I should not cut 3/8” off the ends off the shackle bolts? I think that would give me enough room to install the tank. My other option would be to cut out the bolts I welded into the rear crossmember and weld in some nuts, but the bolts sticking down really make it easy to install the tank and skid plate from below until I flipped the shackle bolts.

The tank and skid plate are in! I didn’t need to cut the shackle bolts down, I just had to be 2% smarter than the bolts and loosen them to the point that I could slide the top shackle nuts up against the shackles. 0F255B27-A366-415C-B69C-AC01A7AA8D67.jpeg

So everything clears with the bolts tightened? Smarter everyday.

Once the skid plate and tank are installed, you can tighten the bolts down and there is plenty of clearance.

I’m not at the painting stage yet, so I painted a blank clock spruce tip green and am going to hang it on my office wall to make sure I like it. Original color was presidential red (which my wife prefers).

Where did you buy the paint? What’s the cost to paint a Jeep?

I bought the paint from a local paint shop in town called Weco. They have been great to work with. They were able to cross check the formula with what Kaiser and I believe AMC originally used. I'm painting it myself, so I'm just looking at materials. I will post more info when I buy the big can. I just bought a pint to try it out.

Today, I turned my jeep from a skateboard into a scooter. I now have a steering mechanism.
I also cleaned, painted, and rebuilt my propeller shafts. IMG_9529.jpeg
    IMG_9532.jpeg
The only problem I encountered was that the zerk on the bottom u joint on the propeller shaft on the left is blocking motion and will break off. That side was missing a zerk when I took everything apart - I thought I was pretty smart for figuring that out and putting on a new one, but a smart guy would have figured out why it broke off in the first place! If I can’t get a zerk that doesn’t block movement, I think my next step would be to replace it with a new spicer non-serviceable u joint. Is that the correct approach?

Why not replace it with a zerk (note the spelling) that matches the others?

I keep misspelling and going back and correcting. I don’t know if I am a blockhead or my phone is sabotaging me! It has the same kind of zerk as the other end already. It needs a different kind. I have new u joints in order.

There are plenty of threads on paint color and just as many opinions. Not sure if you are trying to duplicate the original look or not.
I had messed up the color I had done it in originally with a strong de-greaser. Long story. I could not find that paint again. This time
I used an engine paint for higher temps and is supposed to contain ceramic. I like it as well as anything. Spray can for easy touch-up.

This looks like a decent product but I have no experience with it. Supposed to be the correct Buick green.

I mean I am looking for the blue paint that still exists under all the grease! I have seen the duplicolor product, but not the POR one. Thanks.

Looks like a Ford blue color. No harm in changing the color.

The plan was to clean engine, repaint, replace gaskets. Buying a jeep is like picking a scab. You just can’t stop!

I’m temporarily stuck. The engine had good numbers when I compression tested it at the beginning of the project (140-144 or something like that - I don’t have the numbers in front of me) but I see all this soot and debris. How much of this is a problem? I will post this question on the tech site also IMG_9620.jpeg
