I posted elsewhere a question about having a rear wheel bearing/cup that did not sit flush with the end of the axle housing. I spent a lot of time reading and watching videos about preload and shimming the axles.
My understanding of preload is that if there is greater than .006” play in the axle shaft, the bearings are not seating properly and will wear poorly. If there is less than .001” play, there will be too much heat. Shimming the axle should set me in that proper range.
My bearing/cup sits about 1/16 (measured by eyeballing) proud on the passenger side, but the shims that were in place before I took it apart for cleaning and new seals makes the assembly flush. It seems like I’m this case the shins are making the axle housing “longer” in order to compensate for an axle shaft assembly that is too long. Is this a proper use of shims, or do I have another problem that was fake solved with shims?
    Thanks in advance.

It protrudes a little by design so you can adjust the preload with the shims.

Does that mean that the drivers side which sits flush is set it too far?

No. Typically all the shims go on one side. If it bothers you with the wheels being 1/16" off center in the Jeep, you can split the shims with half on each side.

Thanks for the quick responses. I will just lean a little to the drivers side when I am driving if needed!
