Newbie, have ? on spring plates for 1 3/4 springs. 81 cj someone welded spring & shackle hangers off early cj w 1 3/4 springs, rear axle perches left 2 1/2 inch, cobbled spring plate width w steel to widen. new lift being purchased, grind down width of spring perch & new early plate? or change out all spring & shackle hangers back to stock 81 springs? Where to get 72-75 rear spring plate? or use 76 or newer plate and leave gap between u bolt & spring? quite a dilema trying to figure out what to do. Ride qlty 1 3/4 vs. newer spring style? any info appreciated

I've been told the later model springs, 76 on up ride better and the YJ ride better yet. I have no personal experience on either, I'm still running the inch and three quarter.

The newer, wider springs will be more stabile. I would switch back to the stock width CJ or Wrangler springs. 4 Wheel Drive Hardware (4wd.com) carries replacement parts for this kind of project. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info, I think I may be leaning toward rewelding all brackets for wrangler springs thanks.

The wrangler springs are very very comfy. if you go spring under then you will have less of a problem getting the shocks to mount, putting them spring over and you have to deal with the shock mounting and bending springs.

If you are going to do the work anyway, then go ahead and go with the YJ springs. They really do ride good.
